Interview with Cheryllynn Dyess

Published 2014-09-17.
What are you working on next?
Currently I am working on two books, the first is called The Diamond Diaries and the second The Veil. The Diamond Diaries is a journal entry style book all from the life of a diamond from inception to the end of its time, whereas The Veil is about a young woman who finds out she is an immortal and part of a secret society in the human race.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When not writing most of my time is dedicated to my family. I am homeschooling one of my children, have a household to keep up with and then there are the tasks of marketing.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Many of the ebooks I discover from online book parties or suggestions from friends. Some I discover by chance.
What is your writing process?
My writing process is very simple - I sit at the computer and let it flow. I do not do any organizing or planning, I tried and it has failed miserably. With the book The Diamond Diaries I have had to do a lot of research to make sure it follows the timeline of humanity and such.
How do you approach cover design?
Cover design is difficult because it is all visual. I know what I see in my mind but finding the perfect photos to use and getting it together tends to be harder than writing the book. I have a great designer I work with and she takes my descriptions, photos and suggestions and works her magic and Poof! There is my cover!
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Heku series, The Vampire Hunters series, the Necoh series, and the GateKeepers Series and that is probably more than twenty books. Each book in each series bring about a curious urge that keeps you reading until you are done.
What do you read for pleasure?
The Vampire Hunters series and the Arcadia Chronicles as well a few others. Most every thing I read has fantasy, thriller, paranormal, suspense all mixed in.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love my iPad as a first choice, then my Kindle app on my Laptop and then the one on my phone.... in that order!
Describe your desk
I have no desk - I work where I can get comfortable right now. Today is the kitchen table and many days it is my rocking chair.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Southeastern part of Georgia. I believe my writing was influenced by the nature I was surrounded by. I loved to be outdoors and really enjoy all that is there, except the spiders of course but you will notice in my writing that nature is a huge part.
When did you first start writing?
I was around 14 when I have my first documented writing, if it was any earlier I have no proof.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The Jein's Journey series is about a young woman staying true to herself no matter what anyone else says. She struggles inwardly and outwardly with this battle until the end when she finds that being true to herself all this time is what has made all she has possible.

This is very much a reflection in life and how many people struggle to conform to societies definitions of them. I believe if you are different then be different, be you.
