Interview with Chris Norgate

What's the story behind your latest book?
It follows a week in the life of Valentine Orphanet, all 13 days of it. She - after a brief stay in hospital where she is attacked by a life leaching monster in human disguise and meets a Vor called Ludo who eats pain, before travelling to Wykeham where she meets a very scary old Witch, underground Masters and animal mutilations before travelling back to London on the trail of a long list of missing persons. Girls from villages across the Country disappear after being sent to the big city to study for their futures, unfortunately none of them are seen in quite the same way again.

Its about righting wrongs and solving occult crimes and trying to stay alive long enough to do it.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've hated the written word since I was a small child - they keep wriggling and moving around the page and for some reason I keep forgetting what some letters look like (especially y's, g's and that other one I can't see on the keyboard right now - which is hard as I have a g in my name and forget how to write it all the time.)
I then found myself (badly) writing reports and risk assessments at work and began to list all my common spelling mistakes.......a list now three pages long! The blog was supposed to help me repeat words until I could write them correctly and then the book just grew and grew until it became something I could turn into fiction. It wasn't supposed to be a full story, just an exercise in English. I also learned what a thesaurus was an who knew there were so many words for the same thing!
What do your fans mean to you?
If I had some I'd tell you. But I know when I was posting on a blog the daily updates some people thought it was a real diary and we're concerned when I went on holiday and didn't add anything for 5 days; it was just as Valentine was about to go into the Medway Hotel and a few people though she had died and left messages saying they were going to call 911 or 999 and report her missing. I felt guilty that they had felt concern for one of my characters and genuinely glad there are people out there following Valentine's adventures and sticking up for her.
What are you working on next?
The continuing story of Xanthic and Valentine and how / if / when she becomes a witch and exactly who is behind the kidnapping of country girls and "others " for the experiments. But also a different book about lost love, a quest for justice and morals. .....oh and a journey through He'll for freedom from demons and two twin witches out to relocate a possessed demon from their brother. So typical love story really.
