Interview with Cindy Burrows

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born and grew up in The Bahamas. It is a former British colony. Being part afro decent and so close to the United States, and descended from slaves, it has an impact.
When did you first start writing?
I first starting writing quite unexpectantly as a late teen, poetry etc...But more seriously after art school. I wrote short stories, then it progressed to novels in 2005. I was first published in 05/2006.

What's the story behind your latest book?
It is about a mulatto slave girl who has some decisions to make about survival, love, and race during/after the civil war.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The potential of losing control/rights to my story and not getting fair compensation if I went the regular route.

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Getting to know the characters and share their journey. They become so real.

Should be/maybe a sequel to this one.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I teach art to children. That's what I was trained in...
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, 'Beyond the Tall Grass'.
What is your writing process?
I get inspired, then I start making notes. I handwrite​ at least have the book then start typing.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
A Tale of Two Cities, Mutiny On Board H.M.S Bounty, Tom Sawyer, Escape to Last Man Peak. etc. I was an avid reader.
What do you read for pleasure?
Historical non-fiction, historical fiction...
How do you approach cover design?
Because I am an artist, I just let the book speak to me and I decide what to paint.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Wuthering Heights, The Firm - I like irony and thrills in a book.
Who are your favorite authors?
Alice Walker, John Grisham, Dickens, Jane Austen, Lena Hart............
