Interview with Claire O'Kane

When did you first start writing?
I first began to start writing in 2010, it was a difficult beginning for me as I have always had a feeling that I would write a number of books. I just didn't believe that it was possible ! I grew up believing that I was unable to write as my English grammar was not the best and that I was intelligent enough but here I am ! just completed my first book and already onto the second. This was such an amazing achievement for me as it broke through the barriers of my fear :)
What's the story behind your latest book?
The book is three part book - It includes a few chapters of my life in the beginning of the book, an opportunity to understand and know where life has taken me and the deep lessons that I learned along the way. The second part is the one thing that I found inside that began to strengthen and motivate and push me to begin to change my life. The Self Energising Life Force. The third section is the Lessons that I have learned along the way.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was motivated to become and indie Author as it gave me the freedom to be who I am as a writer, I have a voice and whilst it may not be the most well written book, it is a true honest and open account of my message to others. I choose it this way because after all I teach the Self Way - so I wanted to begin my Book journey through the self way firstly.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I have been given a wonderful opportunity to reach companies easily without effort to sell my books.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy that I find from writing is the hope that I will be able to help another with the words from my book.
What do your fans mean to you?
I don't see them as fans, I see them as fellow survivors of Life. I truly believe that we all have to become our own fan.
What are you working on next?
I am working on an exciting book and online programme that will ignite and release the feelings of guilt that is associated with so many people. Especially those that are living with the Invisible conditions such as chronic fatigue, depression etc
Who are your favorite authors?
As a child my favourite author was Roald Dahl. As an adult I love to read such variety that it is very hard to make one my favourite.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
When you have lived with depression and have physically been unable to walk at times, you cherish the fact that you can. You appreciate and experience life differently and I push my self each day to experience the wonder and beauty of life in the silent moments and the noise of life. That's what inspires me to get out of bed everyday.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to help others and when I am not writing I am speaking and mentoring others. I love to travel - so I take every opportunity to travel to new places, experiencing the local culture and countries.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Northern Ireland - It has influenced my writing and motivated me to write the other side of the story. So much of Northern Irelands literature is about the troubles. There is another side to that story, the side that offers the strength and motivation from individuals like my parent, who stood up for equal rights - yet did everything in their power to shield us from the negative mind set of the troubles.
