Interview with Coach Melvin

When did you first become interested in martial arts?
I became very interested in martial arts after seeing Bruce Lee (playing “Kato” on the TV show, The Green Hornet) perform his martial arts. We did not know it was kungfu he was doing and, to us kids, it was a SUPER SMOOTHE and fast type of Karate. I first realized I had the talent for it when I was 17 and wanted a different way to defend myself in gang fights, other than the typical boxing type of fighting. Karate interested me at first because with judo, you had to actually try to grab someone, whereas with Karate, you could kick from a distance.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My five favorite books are in this order: 1 - The Holy Bible; 2 - A Dictionary/Thesaurus; 3 - Rich Dad Poor Dad (Robert Kiyosaki);
4 - Cashflow Quadrant (Robert Kiyosaki); 5 - Own Your Own Corporation (Garret Sutton).

I love the Holy Bible (New Living Translation) because, not only is it written in the English language I've spoken all of my life, it is my manual for living. Since 1st grade I've always been fascinated with words and I pored through dictionaries and the thesaurus. Mr. Kiyosaki's first book, gave me the mental impetus to walk away from the corporate work force. Cashflow Quadrant deepened my desires to be sellf-sufficient, and Own Your Own Corporation freed me from the employee-mentality and helped me to form my own company.
What do you read for pleasure?
For pleasure I read information about business, the stock market and the latest consumer high-technology products.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I prefer an Android tablet as my e-reading device of choice.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing professionally when I penned my first book, Defend Yourself: Secrets to Protect Yourself From a Hostile Dog Attack 10 years ago. It took much research and sweat-equity to complete that book, and I vowed never to write another.

However, because of the success of the book within martial arts circles, I was compelled to author another book, The Book on Amazing, Internal STRESS Release: 10 Steps to Free Yourself Forever, which pushed me to the platform of an award-winning author. Currently, I'm working on my third book, Profiles of African-American Tai Chi Masters: Get Powerful Martial Arts Secrets, which is very comprehensive and time-consuming. Many are saying because of what it portrays, it definitely has historical significance and will leave an indelible legacy for the featured masters in the book.
What's the story behind your latest book?
What happens when you bring some of the biggest names—of African-American Tai Chi Chuan masters—in the history of the martial arts and gather them all together “under one roof” (publication) so-to-speak?

You get more than 850,000 students and admirers desiring this first-ever book of African-American Tai Chi masters that want a peek into a world thought by non-martial artists to be based on mystery and mysticism—a world known only by these master’s students, peers and the teachers who taught them. From their humble beginnings to their achievement of high levels of mental and physical martial skills, not easily attainable without sacrifice and perseverance, these disciples of high-ranking, highly respected, renowned grandmasters command considerable respect and adoration both within and outside the realm of martial arts.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I felt that the large publishing conglomerate was a monstrosity, in addition to requiring so much of an author and favoring already well established authors and highly popular politicians, sports figures or entertainers. They only gave a small percentage to the "average" author if they did select one. Also, many of the New York Times bestselling authors have reported that they have earned only a pittance for all of their effort. Lastly, an author loses control over much of his asset.

I felt that as an indie author, I retained control and receive 100% for my efforts.

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?

What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean THE WORLD to me because many times when I am out in public, someone approaches me and says, "Excuse me! Aren't you Coach Melvin?" Then they'll want an autograph or give them a quick tip on something I've written about or a quick photo op with their iPhone.
