Interview with Denise Nye-Ward

How do you approach cover design?
I design my covers based on the story within. I love graphics and form, so I generally end up with an eye-pleasing combination of those plus splashes of color. I'm quite particular when designing my covers because it's the first impression the reader sees. I feel an obligation to show my reader, what lies within the pages of my book, in picture form first.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like to read biographies and non-fiction the most. I think that life is more interesting and unpredictable than fiction, most of the time.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
That's an easy one. Kindle. I am so addicted to reading on my Kindle, it's like my third arm.
Describe your desk
My desk is a moving target. Sometimes it's at a table on my screen porch, sometimes on the sectional with laptop in lap, and sometimes at my computer in a traditional seat. Wherever my desk happens to be on any given day, it always has my computer, Kindle, phone and lots of tablets. Sheets of paper containing notes are scattered around me as I compile thoughts. And of course, my cup of coffee and usually two Maine coon cats to bounce ideas off of.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in rural central Pennsylvania and that has influenced everything I am. I was exposed to nature and appreciation for art throughout my childhood and this has had a great effect on my writing. My writing style is factual, with little fluff, as simple and straight forward as my childhood.
When did you first start writing?
I have enjoyed writing all my life but didn't start publishing my work until 2012. I recently found an autobiography I did when I was ten years old, and after many laughs, decided it was pretty good.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have design and color knowledge that I felt I needed to share with the world. The information in our brains deserves to be released if it can add value to another's life. So, I decided to create and organize the concepts I am privileged enough to have collected in my brain.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy in writing is creating a work that did not exist before and then sharing my orderly thoughts with others.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
This is going to sound cliche but, I look at each day as another chance to make a difference in the world. I try to imagine each day as my last and make the most of it. That's what keeps me going.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When not writing, I love gardening, tending my bonsai collection, traveling, and just creating. The creating takes form in cooking, artwork, sewing, and sculpting.
What is your writing process?
WOW, this is a tough one. I start with a general concept of a topic I want to expand on. Then I sketch out sub-topics and place them in order to create a story that flows. From there I start expanding on each section until it conveys what I want it to convey. When the draft is complete I refine until the final product appears.
