Interview with Lorraine Murray

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
We run a teaching programme in the UK and Ireland and also offer this online - it's called Connected Kids and we love taking people through the steps of how to teach their kids (including teens) some simple ways to practise mindfulness and meditation.
Who are your favorite authors?
I'm a fan of Dr Dan Siegel and Dr Rick Hanson, however if it's fiction then i like Khaled Hosseini. Just read 'Trash' by Andy Mulligan - fantastic book.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
When I was at primary school I wrote a story about the house going on fire and our escape - it finished with the TV blowing up! I received a gold star from my teacher!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Not sure if it is 'inspired' but my 7 year old black lab, and 18 month old golden retriever need their morning walks!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
usually through friends or work colleagues
What is your writing process?
Take myself away for a week to 'mind dump' then spend many nights trying to research and write the remainder.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is the one I remember - I read it at least 20 times until the book cover started to fall apart.
How do you approach cover design?
It has to touch my heart and my emotions.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Prophet - a momentous time in my life
The Kite Runner - I cried at the end of the book for at least 20 minutes
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - perfect storytelling
The Whole Brain child - amazing book - well worth reading to help us understand kids.
Into the magic shop - combining mindfulness techniques and a story.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a lot of books on meditation! I like something that demonstrates the positive and funny qualities of human nature.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
usually on my pc
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
social media and my website. Plus I'm pretty good at keeping in touch with my database.

at the moment it's pretty tidy!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Scotland - we are a very resilient nation.
When did you first start writing?
About 6 years ago - Calm Kids was published through a publisher in 2012 and has sold thousands around the world. Connected Kids is my first self-published book.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Showing adults of any experience how to teach kids meditation and especially kids/teens with special needs, autism or adhd.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wanted more control!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Hearing from readers who tell me how what I write about really works (and helps).
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything - couldn't do it without them.
What are you working on next?
A book about helping looked after kids, social workers and foster carers learn how to bring mindful skills to help with trauma.
