Interview with Corrie Fischer

Published 2013-12-15.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I have lived in a number of states across the U.S. As a result, I have experienced many sub-cultures within the states. Anyone who has moved or frequently travelled will understand my meaning. Therefore, I have met a number of individuals with some truly unique qualities and flaws. I feel this diversity amongst my experiences has helped me develop a wide variety of interesting, often strange, characters within my writing.
When did you first start writing?
I can hardly remember. After third grade, I was primarily schooled at home. As a result, I was able to quickly finish my curricular activities without waiting on other classmates. This allowed me plenty of extra time to read. I have loved literature from a young age and can still often be found with my nose buried in a book. If I had to specify an age I began truly writing, I would say around fourteen. This was when I first attempted to write a book. It was an attempt which has since been buried and will hopefully never again see the light of day. Nevertheless, I persisted, writing a multitude of short stories, essays and so forth. Finally, here I am today, with a recently published novel.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Oh, there is a tough question. In many ways, it the story of me. The story of my life, and real events that have happened to me. For those who have read it, the cockroach paranoia is absolutely based on fact. There is also far more to it. Many of my life beliefs are weaved within the fictional fabric of the tale. Of course, if one wants to know more about those, they must read the book and discover them as the story develops.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I would say the greatest joy is getting lost in the story. Some days it feels like the words are typing themselves onto the keyboard without any instruction from my mind or hands. The characters come alive to me. It is their choices, not my own, that determines the path of the story and that is a beautiful thing.
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on a sequel to REM, the second book in the Shattered Sky Series. I must admit I am quite excited about this endeavor. Since most of the characters are from the first book, there is less time required to develop them, allowing me to jump straight into the action with this novel.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have so many. I would say J.K. Rowling, Frank Peretti, Ted Dekker, and Karen Hancock are among my favorites.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The belief there is something more and that I have a destiny yet to be revealed.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I have a Kindle app on my phone that I frequently use to discover new novels. I have also connected with several other Indie authors through Facebook and Twitter and have recently been reading the work of Scott Langrel.
How do you approach cover design?
I have found several online resources that been extremely helpful in this process.
Describe your desk
It is invisble.
What do your fans mean to you?
I believe fans should mean the world to any and every author. After all, for me at least, my stories are meant to enjoyed by others. It is a major why I dedicate hours a day to write them.
