Interview with Courtney Shockey

What do your fans mean to you?
The world and more. Every person that sends me a message or even likes a post on facebook gives me the boost I need to keep going. I appreciate every one of you.
What are you working on next?
Currently I have a few projects going at once. Mostly romance but always with a twist!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My kids! They're my world and everything I do is for them or to help them in some way.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working, mostly. I have a full time job and a house to run in the meantime. My husband and I enjoy watching movies together and going to concerts. My kids and I sing very loudly and make swag together.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I attend a lot of takeovers on facebook that introduce me to authors I've never heard of. Also, I browse through any store to find books in my favorite genres.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I was in 6th grade and decided to start a story. My mind went to something similar to a murderer in the woods preying on teens. I've always had a bit of shadow in my writing.
What is your writing process?
After an idea pops in my head a few times, I write it down. I never plot out the story because that is way too many restrictions and obligations to me. I start with what's going on and an idea of where I want to end. The rest flows in its own way and grows how it wants.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first real story I can remember reading was Where the Red Fern Grows. It sucked me in and I didn't want to do anything but read until I finished. Once done, I couldn't find another story fast enough. To be pulled into another world and feel someone else's feeling is what I crave. If I ever achieve that, I will forever be on cloud 9.
How do you approach cover design?
Research, research, research. After looking and talking to many people, I found the perfect person I feel shares my enthusiasm and passion for my books. In the end, you have to trust that person with your work and your future. Everyone judges a book by its cover. It's the first thing they see and ultimately what draws them in.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The SAFELIGHT Series by Imy Santiago is my number 1. The story ripped my heart apart and molded it back together, and that was just the first book! Absolutely amazing writing and story.
The Gabriel Trilogy by Sylvain Reynard. I never knew such passion could be transferred through words until that trilogy.
The Otherworld Series by Yasmine Galenorn. Everything. That's all I can say.
The Guild Hunter Series by Nalini Singh. Pure ecstasy and such heartbreaking action. Wonderful.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wrote my first actual story I wanted to share with the world and tried to go the traditional route with an agent and publisher. Months of rejections finally made me realize that wasn't the path for me. A person can only take so many "no's". I couldn't think of doing it any other way now. I have control of every step and make the final decisions. Who doesn't love being their own boss?
