Interview with Ciara Miller

Published 2013-11-17.
Describe your desk
It's so cluttered I don't actually use it. Nine times out of ten I sit outside on my screened-in balcony and write on my laptop.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Arizona and my parents did their best to expose me to literature from a very young age. They also tried to get me in as many school and non-school programs as they could, which I think gave me plenty of experiences to draw from. I've always been really creative, though, and I think my writing stems more from other life experiences I've had than from my surroundings as a child.
When did you first start writing?
I scribbled down my first bit of nonsense when I was maybe 7 or 8 (it's difficult to recall). I know I wanted to write and illustrate a children's book, but it never went anywhere. You can imagine I didn't have much creative discipline at that age. I started writing poetry when I was 12 (excluding school assignments earlier than that) and I found I really enjoyed it. When I was 14 I started writing fanfiction and when I was 15 I finished my first book. It was total crap, though, and I don't think it will ever see the light of day.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is my first book and it's about the emotional struggle of a 30-year-old woman stuck in a loveless marriage with an abusive husband. She meets a woman through her work as a doctor and they become friends. This woman ends up saving her soul and teaching her that it's possible to love and be happy again.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I don't know... I'm only just publishing today, so fingers crossed I'll see success! I've found the site very helpful and easy to use, however, and I'm hoping for good things in the future.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I've always seen writing as the best way to get in touch with my creative side and vent my emotions, but in the last two years I've discovered the absolute joy in letting others read my work and comment on it. I mainly post on a fanfiction board online and I'm always receiving motivating and helpful feedback. I love knowing that other people have enjoyed my writing as much as I have.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean the world, honestly. I don't have any fans yet as a published author, but my readers on BGR (Bad Girls Riot message board) are wonderful. They always manage to lift me up if I'm doubting myself or having a bad day.
What are you working on next?
My next big project is going to be another lesbian romance novel, but this time it's going to be set in Scotland in either the 1500s or the 1700s (I still haven't decided yet). I have a rough plot outline in my head but I haven't put much down yet.
Who are your favorite authors?
I absolutely love J.R.R. Tolkien and J.K. Rowling. I've also really enjoyed stuff by Ellen Hopkins and Neal Shusterman.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
This one is easy: my girlfriend. She means everything to me and she has been so incredibly supportive through this nerve-wracking process. I would be lost without her.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
My free time is spent with my girlfriend and occasionally a friend (though I have to admit I'm a bit of a shut-in). We usually watch something on television or write together, but sometimes we pick a book to read together as well.
