Interview with CM Hutton

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Texas in a really small town east of Dallas. I'm not sure that it really influenced my writing, but I do remember loving to write from an early age. My mom was/is a school teacher and I loved "playing school" and generally being bossy. I followed in her footsteps and became a teacher myself earning a BS in Education with a minor in English. So, I guess writing has always been something I have enjoyed and tends to come easy to me.
When did you first start writing?
I used to keep a notebook with different types of writings in them when I was in Jr. High. I wrote poems and silly little short stories. I thought at one point that I wanted to be a children's book author, but romance writing is much more my speed these days. My day job is so centered around children that I need some "grown up" time...even if it's only my imagination that gets scrolled down on paper.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Wow! That's a little tricky to answer without giving away any spoilers. Let's just say that the book is centered around a deep, emotional event that involved someone close to me. As I was writing it, I kept thinking, "This is like a freaking Lifetime movie!"
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I love to read indie books! I have been lost in them these last few years! I never pursued the traditional route of publishing because I just didn't know much about it. I wanted my story out there solely for people to read and enjoy. Traditional publishers seemed (in my mind) to be all about cash flow, sales and reviews. I have a day job that I love. Writing is a release and an absolute pleasure for me. Being able to be an indie author gives me that opportunity.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords gave me the tools and access to be able to put my novel out there for the world to read.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love story telling! As my husband and he will tell you that I never stop talking and ever bit of information I have to tell him becomes a twenty minute blow by blow story! lol
What do your fans mean to you?
I love when I find out that I have fans who follow me. It makes me smile! I like to think about how my writing could bring about tons of emotions or just help someone get lost in the story and escape their own reality for a little while.
What are you working on next?
Oh my gosh! I'm excited to say that not only am I working on the sequel to "Paradise Taken," but I am about halfway done with a standalone novel that has been tugging at my heart for a few years. I'm head-over-heels in love with the characters!
Who are your favorite authors?
Wow....the list is exhaustive. So here goes a few.....SC Stephens, Jay Crownover, Molly McAdams, Kristen Proby, Jodi Ellen Malpas, M. Leighton, Cora Carmack, RL Mathewson, Syndey Landon, Colleen Hoover, Sylvain Reynard, Gail McHugh, Sylvia Day, Abbi Glines, Bella Andre, Aleatha Romig, EL James.....I could go on and on! I've found such incredible indie authors to read and have completely fallen in love with their characters.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I am a mother of three (two teenage girls and a nine year old boy) and a teacher. I love being a mom and love my job! Yes, I love teaching! I am generally a happy person and just want to experience life. When I started writing again, after several years of mothering that took a lot of my attention, I would get so crazy with ideas that I would find myself up at four o'clock in the morning to write them down. I get this spark in me in the evening when I know I'm about to sit down at the computer and tune out the world as I plug into my characters' lives.

I can do this because I have an incredible hubby who is so supportive of my writing!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I READ! Well, not just read....I spend time with my family. I love to travel and hang out with my girlfriends. Because I teach school, some evenings are consumed with my "day job" responsibilities. But, that is just fine by me. It keeps me from constantly watching over my book and reading reviews. lol
