Interview with John Rookwood

Published 2021-07-30.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Have you ever had a song stuck in your head? I've heard the best way to get it to stop echoing is to sing it out loud. It's the same for me and my stories. I'll wake up with scenes playing out in my head and they won't stop until I write them down.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords makes it easy to publish my work, I read over the guidelines on how to prepare my books and with a few tweaks to the files they were ready to go.
Getting a publishing deal is hard enough if you work is mainstream, erotic stories are even harder to get out to the public. Sure, there are other publishing sites and aggregators who let people sell their work but storefronts for the Nook and Kindle are reluctant to sell adult material.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love to write, but most of all I love to hear that people like what they read. A positive review for an author is like a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter's morning.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans make the effort of writing and publishing worth it. A lot of people don't realize how much time and effort go into writing a book, even a short one.
Who are your favorite authors?
I'm a sci-fi junkie who likes stories with action, humor, well thought out characters and a good plot. As such I read book series by Jim Bernheimer, Jim Butcher, Larry Correia, James Corey, Peter David, Neil Gaiman, Drew Hayes, Barry J Hutchinson, Elliot Kay, and Jodi Taylor.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My mortgage... Well that and the simple fact that my mind need stimulation. If I'm not reading something interesting, I'm doing something or trying to learn how to do something. Boredom is my worst enemy.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I read, I watch the short list of shows I like, I play RPGs or video games. Then of course there are my pets who are constantly demanding attention.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
'Goodreads' is a great source of suggestions, as are my friends who are also big readers.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
HAH! Yes it was a horrible little one page thing I did in elementary school for an English class. I remember because I was the only kid who wrote a story with an actual plot. The other kids all wrote about playing with their dog or what they wanted to be when they grew up. I wrote about an astronaut trying to leave the Solar System but being blocked by a barrier. I was a science nerd from the start
What is your writing process?
I didn't even know there was a word for it until recently, but I'm a 'pantser' style writer. I sit down to write and the words just pour out onto the page as the story forms in my head. Later I revise and then revise again, but the initial process is fast.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Not really. The first book I had was a "Peanuts Treasury" with years of the Charlie Brown newspaper comic strips in it. I had it before I could read. I looked at the pictures and as I learned to read it got re-read hundreds of times.
The book that had the biggest impact on me was Douglas Adams' "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy". I blame that book for my twisted sense of humor.
How do you approach cover design?
I like a cover that hints at the story but don't like covers that give away epic endings or important plot points. I dislike plain covers with just the title and author on them. That works for classics but if you want to get noticed, you need to tease me a little.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
That list would be a book unto itself.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I've got a Lenovo tablet with the Wit Reader app for most things. It also has the Moon Reader for comic books and the Kindle app. I don't have a favorite brand of device since I'm happy so long as the hardware works.
Describe your desk
My desk is virtual and exists on my laptop. I write from an armchair with my computer on a lap desk. Everything I need for research is on the internet and I can play music while I work.
