Interview with Donavon James

When did you first start writing?
I actually use to write some of the most lovely letters when I was younger to girls I liked. I was really shy back then. But then I went to the military and got stationed at some of the most gorgeous places in the world. I started writing poetry as a way to pass the time. I found it very soothing and calming. But haven't written anything in years.
What's the story behind your latest book?
This book is really about the struggle I have always had when it came to dealing with my sexual issues. All my life I have had to deal with so much. I really wrote this as a "please understand me" letter. It just turned into so much more than that.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first real book I read was A Time to Kill. It was probably the most influential book at the time I read it. As a African American male, I found it disheartening to believe that people of the opposite race could be so heartless. It put a bad taste in my mouth at that time. Took me a while to change my views.
