Interview with Morgan Lockheart

What motivated you to become an indie author?
Control. Pretty much that really. In every creative avenue I have ever explored at some point you have to hand over control of your product to someone else. Unless you trust that person or company or have a good working relationship with them, it's hard to let go. I decided if I was going to try this, I wanted complete autonomy.

As for why erotica, that was something I decided to do after receiving another compliment on the short stories I had put up on various websites over the past decade. I discovered that other people were having fun publishing their work and felt that it was something that I could do too.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
There's this place or mindframe that I get into when I am in the full flow of writing. When my mind is creating rapidly and my hands are typing, everything else in life seems to fall away and disappear. During those moments, it feels almost godly the way I am weaving a world and story together and there is nothing in this world like it.
What are you working on next?
I have two other standalone stories that I want to write of a similar length to my first one however I also have a series of shorts that I am thinking of publishing. I would be using recurring characters but in different situations and with *ahem* 'interesting' outcomes.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I go with recommendations normally, particularly from friends who know the type of thing I like to read. Occasionally I will search by tag or theme, other times I will just browse until something pops out at me.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Mmmm, first real story or first rude story? I found my first attempt at a novel the other day and it was still an impressive length for someone just into high school. My first bits of naughty writing came from dares made by friends and a few joint stories written with people I was trying to impress, nothing very daring and no, the attempts to impress did not work either.
What is your writing process?
I start from a simple idea then I try and write it down in a series of bullet points. I swap points around, add new ones, delete bad ones until I'm happy. I then feel that I have something to work with, a road map of sorts. I then sit down and write my first draft. This is the bit I love, letting it all flow.

Once the draft is written, I do two edits before I dare to let anyone else read it. My first is a creative edit, done to fix ideas and things that I didn't describe well in my first draft. I also correct typos and spelling errors here too. The second edit I call my technical edit and I use it to prepare it for ebook formats as well as picking up on anything else that I feel I may have missed on my first edit.

Once that's done, I let two trusted friends read it and listen to their feedback. Based on their opinions I will either go ahead and publish or do another edit until I'm happy. This method seems to have worked for me well so far.
What do you read for pleasure?
It depends on what kind of pleasure sweetie...

Obviously I enjoy erotic fiction but I love sci-fi and fantasy, crime thrillers and mythology. I like a good comedy book too, something that makes me laugh and takes me out of my head for a bit is a godsend for me. Occasionally I choose to read poetry but I have to be in a very specific frame of mind for it.
Describe your desk
My desk is a glorified mess. I try to justify its existence by holding on to little scraps of paper that hold valuable ideas for my next story but the truth is I'm just a very messy person. I do live by post it notes though. If those little sticky pads had not been invented my desk would have scribbles all over it.
What do your fans mean to you?
I'm deeply appreciative of anyone who likes my work and takes time to read it. I think the worst thing that any writer can suffer is to be unknown so for someone to read what I have been writing and enjoy it is the ultimate reward. In the end, a person's success relies on other people liking what they do so I believe that anyone who is popular should be as devoted to their fans as their fans are to them.
