Interview with Daefyd Williams

Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite authors are Herman Melville, Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I read, go for walks, watch movies, attend plays and concerts.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I download ebooks on my iPhone.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was called Out of the Ashes, about a survivor of a nuclear holocaust.
What is your writing process?
I read somewhere that Charles Dickens, with all of his prodigious output, only wrote two pages a day. That's what I aim for.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I ever read I'm sure was a Dick and Jane story in the first grade.
How do you approach cover design?
I do a rough drawing of the cover on my computer and then ask my brother, Jim Williams, to bring it to fruition. I think his cover for Fiery Rivers is very eye-catching.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez has to be at the top of the list. It influenced me tremendously, as you will discover If you read my book, Fiery Rivers. 1984 is also favorite, although I don't think George Orwell meant it as a prescriptive for how a society should function. Huckleberry Finn, of course, is a favorite. Journeys out of the Body by Robert Monroe and its sequels were life-changing for me, as was The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle.
What do you read for pleasure?
Right now, I'm reading A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn. I read everything.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a Pentecostal home in Ohio, which had a profoundly deep negative influence on my life, which you will discover in Fiery Rivers, my semi-autobiographical book.

Fiery Rivers is the coming-of-age story of Devon, a ten-year-old boy who lives with his Pentecostal parents in Ohio in the sixties. One day, he commits a sin that engenders a lifelong struggle with obsessive-compulsive disorder. As he attempts to disentangle himself from the disorder, he becomes aware of sex. Intriguing, unexpected scenes of magical realism enliven the narrative.
