Interview with Dakota E. Doran

Published 2015-01-08.
Who are your favorite authors?
Two of my favorite authors are Robert E. Howard and Robert Heinlein. Robert E. Howard was an incredible writer, who had an amazing imagination and barely gets recognized. Robert Heinlein was a monster in the Science Fiction world an is recognized as the Dean of Science fiction. These two men were very different in their lives and their outlook towards writing. Howard wrote because he had a passion to tell a story and tell it well. Heinlein wrote because he had failed at numerous other endeavors and was good enough to get published, but he approached writing from a business standpoint not a passionate one.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
To take care of my family and to see what the day has in store for me and to write on the story I happen to be passionate about at the time.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
We have a small farm. I'm sure I could stop right there and it would be enough said. We raise chickens, goats, pigs and keep a year round vegetable garden. So I'm always doing something around the property. As a besides, we make the best fresh goat yogurt around, sorry its not for sale.
What is your writing process?
First an idea hits me, either I see something that causes a daydream, or just go on a what if adventure. But once I have the idea, which usually begins with a unique character, I put them in a situation they need to resolve. At about this point I start outlining the story, which inevitably leads to a few more other story ideas with the same character. This is when I start writing words to the story, and I muscle through sometimes giving whole sections just a brief one sentence explanation. After the story is done, I start editing, and that usually last about a thousand years or more.
What do you read for pleasure?
Erotica, Science Fiction, Fantasy and some horror.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I wanted to write about a powerful woman, and I wanted something in a crime noir type setting. So I came up with my character Slutty who is a Private Investigator that lives and works in a fictional city called Sugartown. Sugartown is a unique place as well, it has one foot on Earth and one foot someplace else, you might call Sugartown the doorstep to hell.
