Interview with Alejandro Villarreal

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was the most amazing experience! I was like... seven years old. I was already a dark-humored kid, so the teachers thought I would be no more than a functional sociopath... But it turned out that I'm a HIGHLY functional sociopath.
What is your writing process?
I sit up on a cafeteria chair with a good coffe in my hands. I pretend that I lit up a cigarrette - I would smoke in the past, but now I use a vaporizer -, turn on my computer... and start to let words fall on the pages for the next four hours.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes, I don't acctually remember the author of the book, but it was called "La Catedral". A very dark-themed book about a boy who build a church and happens to be an ocultist church... then I started with Harry Potter!
How do you approach cover design?
I design the covers of all of my books. Take that, China.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, Doctor Asleep by Mr. Stephen King, The Four Seasons (also by Mr. King), Every Dead Thing by John Connolly, and 2001 by Arthur C. Clarke.

When you read those books, you will know why they are my favourite.
Describe your desk
A very messed up one.
When did you first start writing?
I started to write seriously at seventeen years old. But at that time I already had a couple of drafts.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I can kill people without going to prison.
Who are your favorite authors?
Stephen King, Patrick Rothfuss, Arthur C. Clarke and Laini Taylor.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading or... Netflix and chill.
