Interview with Danielle Pepe

When did you first start writing?
I started writing as a child, but it wasn't until my 20's did I write a full length novel.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My story follows the journey of a young girl. At 16 years old Alikye has spent her life fulfilling her destiny as a Guardian, an angel hybrid sworn to protect mankind. When the council realizes the threat Alikye becomes with her recklessness and hatred for humans, they send her off to Florida for eight months living a normal life. Through her journey, Alikye finds friendship and love and the truth about herself. But when her real word and fantasy world both collide into a disastrous fight between life and death, it's up to Alikye to save her friends and in turn save herself.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Writing has been my passion since I was a child. As much as I love to write fantasy, I also love all different genre's and being an indie author gives me the freedom to be and do what has always come natural to me.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
In many ways. It has distributed my novel to several different sites.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating my own world. Seeing my words come together and giving life to my characters. When my characters come alive it gives me the greatest joy because I can be proud of who they are and know they belong to me.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. Without them I am just a speck of sand, they give me the whole beach.
What are you working on next?
I have many projects lined up. Book two of the Guardian Series will be out soon. Book one of the Unwanted Series, Unwanted truth, a N/A romance thriller will be out in a few weeks. With those two books finished, I'm currently working on a new Series, another N/A dark romance with many more books in the work.
Who are your favorite authors?
That's a hard question, I have many favorite Authors, many of them also indie authors. My all time favorite who I have had the pleasure in meeting in person too, has to be Elle Casey. I have read every novel she's written and every time I fall in love with her characters over and over again. It's also her journey as a writer that make her an inspiration and I just hope to one day have half the success she has.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My life. As busy as I am, I would never ask for anything more. I have a beautiful daughter, amazing friends, a great job, (Both jobs) I love writing more than breathing some times.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Being a mom, curling up on the couch at night with a good book. I work at a sports bar part time to pass a few hours a day.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I live on my kindle. I'm always shopping around, tagging books that I find interesting. but lately it has been other authors on FB who recommend many of the books I own. Goodreads also helps. I have a huge list of books that I would love to read.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
HAHA!!!! Yes, I was in middle school and obsessed with the backstreet boys. As a child I've always had the same image in my mind of what my main character would be like; strong, independent, smart mouth, with a fierce attitude. The story was a short story about a young girl who lost her family. with only her father left, who coped by drinking, she had a hard life but her music kept her going. Words in songs that inspired her to go on. Long story short, it was about meeting the backstreet boys but during the concert a disaster occurred and in saving the life of her favorite band, the young girl was killed in an heroic way and reunited with her loving family in heaven....... A little dark but thinking about it now makes me laugh.
What is your writing process?
Pen and paper. Free hand. I write without thinking. I let my character's tell the story for me. With music blasting in my ears, I get lost in the world on paper. depending on the emotions my characters feel is what playlist I set up. Later I'll go back, usually I'll wait until the next day to reread it and polish it up. Some times when an idea comes to mind, I'll find whatever is around me and write down the idea. My best ideas come when my computer isn't around.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Believe it or not, it was Twilight. In my earlier years I read a lot, Mark Twain, Jane Austin. Old literature required by school but it was Twilight that impacted my life. After reading the series and not knowing the next book to read to satisfy my craving in the fictional world, I thought to myself, 'whatever, I'll just write my own book. I love to write anyways and I have lots of idea's'
How do you approach cover design?
Cover's I feel are the most important part of the book. I love simple but with a lot of meaning to the story. When their is too much going on, I feel the book is cluttered.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1) Apocalypsis, by Elle Casey, books 1-4
2) Collide, by Riley Hart
3) Beautiful Disaster, by Jamie McGuire
4) Axel, by Harper Sloan
5) Shine not burn, by Elle Casey
What do you read for pleasure?
Romance, from young adult to erotic. Anything supernatural, fantasy, dystopian, zombie apocalypse. It all depends on what kind of mood I'm in.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle fire.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Facebook, believe it or not.
Describe your desk
My bed; a lot of pillows, papers everywhere, wires, blanket and my dog who curls up with me everyday.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I'm from a small beach town in Florida. It was my inspiration for the setting in my first novel. I love the smell of the ocean. Water is a big part of who I am so of course every book I write, every character I create, their is always a connection to water or the smell of the sea.
