Interview with Shawn Hilton

Published 2014-02-23.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Usually with friends and family. I spend most days writing, and when ever an idea hits, so when I am not it is nice to spend it with my family.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I have a lot of friends who are writers, so I try to read their books. That for sometimes i will see something that catches my eye from an ad or by luck.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was a story about a secret admirer, I was 12.
What is your writing process?
I try to fall into the story myself, its not good enough for me to print if I can't be entertained by it.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes actually, it was a book called the Laughing Ghost. It was a dime store novel, and the last book my grandmother ever got to read. When she passed away I started reading it and the last chapter was missing. I spent years trying to find a copy of it just so that i could read the last chapter, but in the time that I was searching I made up one for it. I wrote one a week for months.
How do you approach cover design?
The cover has to fit to the book in some way. I like to finish the idea for the story at least and then make the cover that says what is in side, and can catch the attention.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
wow that is a hard one. Anything from Nalini singh and the Psy changling series, Vampire Academy, anything not Twilight?
What do you read for pleasure?
My hidden pleasure are dime store romances. When my grandmother past away, she left me 5 or 6 paper grocery bags full of them. I spent the next two years reading them all. Ever since they have been what has caught my attention and held it the longest.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a no name Android one. I do not make a lot of money yet so I have to make due with what I have.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Facebook, twitter. using social networks to try and get as much exposure as possible have done best for me.
Describe your desk
laughs... and Absolute disaster area. Seriously I have seen ground zero of bombs with less destruction.
