Interview with Dasia Zanders

When did you first start writing?
I first started writing when I was a child. I loved to take fairy tales and create them into my own where I would add my friends into the story and I had immense fun in doing that. Eventually I found my own adventure to make and spent years creating it.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I could not tell you the first story I ever read because my parents had me reading when I was approaching the age of three, haha. However, the books that have impacted me throughout my teenage years would have to be The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen, Just Listen by Sarah Dessen, Dark Secrets by Elizabeth Chandler and The Year I Turned Sixteen by Diane Schwemm.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy comes from seeing the impact my writing has on someone. I only write for two purposes, the first being for myself to express thoughts and release emotions, and the second to help other people learn things or feel comfort in the words I write. When I write letters or short stories for people, I enjoy seeing their smiles or tears of happiness because it means I made them feel something and if that emotion helps them realize how wonderful of a person they are it honestly makes me happy.
Who are your favorite authors?
I don’t have any favorites only because there are so many books I read and so many people I enjoy. I would have to say though I enjoy the way Sarah Dessen makes all her characters different and puts them in realistic situations that many young girls can relate to. I also appreciate Diane Schwemm and Oscar Wilde.
What is your writing process?
In order for me to write anything I have to be inspired and truly committed to the story. I refuse to write anything that I feel is forced because then it doesn’t feel genuine to me. I hate when passion is lost in any form of art, so I hang around my close friends and family members, they are the best inspiration for me. Sometimes I find inspiration in lyrics or random everyday objects that are used so frequently we forget how important they truly are to our lives. After that I write in one of my journals the organized chart of the type of story I want to write, a list of possible character names and personality descriptions and then I make bullet points of the beginning and the end. Personally, I never plan the middle of any novel only because I feel that it is the place to be creative and make as many twists and turns as you desire, but the beginning and ending should always be preplanned even if you end up changing it, it’s nice to have a reference.
What are you working on next?
I am working on two different novels. I am working on the Cassadine Dagger and Ring which is the sequel to The Cassadine Conception. I love working on The Cassadine Dagger and Ring because it’s the calm before the storm. The second project is a new story idea which I don’t want to reveal any details about just yet because I’m still working all those details out and deciding what I want to do and where I want to go with that storyline.
