Interview with David Morriss

How do you approach cover design?
Whatever I could get away with. I just wanted to publish my stories in the hope that others would enjoy them and relate to them. The closet is a quiet and lonely place
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I loved the bleak honesty of Samuel Beckett
What do you read for pleasure?
I'm not a great reader nowadays but I love books which touch on the quiet despair of man
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'm no good at marketing. I hope that people who need a story like mine will find it. Just like I found smashwords
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in London. The greatest and loneliest place in the world.
When did you first start writing?
When I was young. Living with my parents. Writing stories I could never share
What's the story behind your latest book?
A collection of short stories, all true, which describe the dark secret world of the closet gay man
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Who else would have me?
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It's the only place I have published. The only place I tried. Somewhere that allowed me to share my stories for free. I doubt if I will be successful but I hope that someone enjoys these stories and feels that they are not alone
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Making light of something which is in truth a bit depressing. And maybe reaching out to someone in the same situation. And opening the eyes of those who are not
What do your fans mean to you?
I don't have any fans. But maybe I have a few sympathisers
What are you working on next?
I'm not. I'm done
Who are your favorite authors?
Beckett. Carver.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The people I love. Life. And the thrill of the hunt
