Interview with David S. Holly

Published 2014-03-22.
When did you first start writing?
I have been writing all my adult life - but it is only in the last couple of years that I have had enough time to sit down and actually work hard enough to turn out some novel length works. I am a typical spanko - first acquired the fascination before the age of 10 - thought that I was the only spanko in the whole world - and learned in the internet age I have hundreds of millions of fellow spankos. Which is the main reason all my works have a major spanking element.
What's the story behind your latest book?
"The Gleam in Her Eye" started as a short story that looked at the concept of what would happen if eroticobots (a term I invented for robots engaged in the task of providing erotic entertainment to human partners) gained a fascination is spanking without being programmed for such a liking. It snowballed into a full length book - where a heady combination of sex, sci-fi and spanking is recounted with a huge dose of tongue-in-cheek narrative.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. I really do write for them and I will take constructive criticism from them any day of the week.
What are you working on next?
My work in process "Christmas Day on Death Row" has such a small element of spanking in it, that it is really a mainstream work. For that reason, I may publish it under a different pen name: It tells of how a man who finds that his name has been placed on the "sex-offenders" list is drawn into a legal nightmare: his constant protests of innocence only seem to convince the authorities that he has something to hide.
What is your writing process?
All my works start out as short stories. And spanking short stories - in essence - all have the same three parts. There is going to be a spanking - there is a spanking - there was a spanking. My muse throws me one of the three as a notion, and I have to construct the other two and flesh out all three. The set up (stage one) is often automatic when you know where the tale is going to end. And the aftermath (stage thee) more than often suggest a follow up tale. "Beloved Infidel" started as a snippet - a dialog between a number one wife and a male servant: it just sort of grew to 20,000 words while I watched on.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Catch 22 totally wowed me. It is the one work that I really, really wished I had written myself. Asimov did no wrong with his Empire series. I was enchanted by the dark humor that held realistic(-ish) plots together in the works of Eric Frank Russell.
Terry Pratchett is a god when it comes to writing, And anyone who has read my work "Just Wilhelmina" will know that even after all these years, i have a fond remembrance of the works of Richmal Compton.
Describe your desk
A total mess. I tell SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed aka "Her indoors" aka "The better half" aka "Yes Dear") that it is the hallmark of the creative spirit. She seems to think it is the hallmark of the bone idle.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
It took a long time for England to recover from World War II - and the "laugh at adversity" of those times echoes in my work.
Moving to the United States broadened my outlook, and opened up my writing style.
Do you have a blog?
Indeed - it seems to be a perquisite for all authors of spanking fiction. I try to be a niche blogger, and spend my time discussing the art of writing spanking fiction. No photos, videos or long introspection,
But you can find it at http://bydavidholly.blogspot.com/ But you must promise not to tell Smashwords that I have some free tales of mine on that site.
Will fame and fortune go to your head?
That is a risk that I am really willing to take. Provided, of course, I do not have to reveal my real name. (We spankos are inordinately secretive about our predilection - and I think I already told you that I am very typical of spankos at large).
