Interview with David S Reynolds

What is your writing process?
I don't really have one writing process. Sometimes a story comes to me in the middle of the night and I bang it out in a day. Some stories gestate for months or even years. Sometimes I write an outline and know what will happen next, and other times I am as surprised as the reader.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Most of my e-reading is done on my Kindle. I like that I can travel with it and have so many books taking up so little space, that's important when traveling on a motorcycle!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
The most exposure I get is on Facebook (shameless plug! Search for Renaissance Redneck Media) and I am on twitter and pintrist @davidsreynolds1, but the best marketing is a positive review from readers, so please be sure to leave a review!
Describe your desk
My desk looks like a paper monster vomited before spontaneously exploding.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up and live in Southern Arizona. I'm not sure how that influences my writing, but it has helped me to better appreciate how nature finds a way to thrive. (Other than scorpions. They are killed on sight. I've been stung too many times.)
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
The best thing about Smashwords is that I don't have to chase down all the different formats. Do it once and concentrate on writing!
What do you read for pleasure?
Mostly I read mysteries and science fiction. I enjoy trying to figure out whodunit in a mystery and I like how sci-fi can be used to examine the human condition.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have many things to distract me from writing! I have been building and flying model airplanes for most of my life and have even competed nationally. I am a full on gear head with a love of all things Mopar and have a '65 Power Wagon and a '67 Cornet in the collection. I also enjoy working on motorcycles. I have been known to plink around with guitar from time to time and played bass for a band called Music In Motion for a short time. I also play with photography, you can find some at Fine Art America.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have always had stories floating around in my head and had even written a few down without much thought to what to do with them. Then one day on a motorcycle forum I found a thread on self-publishing. The comment that pushed me over the edge was something like "it's not doing anything on your hard drive."
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Food.
