Interview with D A Latham

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Primarily my network of other salon professionals on Facebook. Hairdressers tend to cultivate our social networks carefully, so my friends on there were an enormous help, and still are.
Describe your desk
I write on my iPad, so my desk is wherever I am. I used write in the salon if I had downtime between appointments. At home, I write in the lounge. All my editing is done in my study on the desktop though. My study veers between ultra tidy, and total chaos.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in South London, which featured heavily at the start of 'A Very Corporate Affair'. I had an overwhelming urge to escape though, and moved to Central London as soon as I could.
When did you first start writing?
I was in my early forties. I was the owner of a couple of salons and I'd been in hair/beauty since leaving school. It began as a challenge to myself to see if I could actually write a book. The first one was Beauty and the Blonde. It was fun to write and gave me the confidence to start A Very Corporate Affair, which went viral and allowed me to retire from salon ownership and write full time.
What's the story behind your latest book?
After finishing Book 3 of A Very Corporate Affair, there was a huge clamour for more. People loved the characters, and the story. I always felt that Ivan was my favourite character, and he had his own story to tell, so I wrote The Taming of The Oligarch, to recount his own take on events, and let him take the Corporate Affair story a bit further.
I'm now working on a completely new story, based on a West End salon, and the experiences of a young, ambitious hairdresser.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
When I was writing 'The Beauty and the Blonde', I plucked up courage to let a few people read it, and they overwhelmingly said I should publish it. After doing some research, and wearing my business head, I figured that I was better off being independent.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I've read Mark Coker's book on indie publishing, and I can honestly say that I've learnt a lot. Smashwords is a terrific tool for widening the availability of my books. My background is business, so I tend to look at indie publishing from that perspective. Multiple channels have got to be better than throwing your lot into just one platform.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating my fantasy world, where I control the events. Tragic and control freaky I know, but I never claimed to be perfect.
What do your fans mean to you?
Do I have 'fans'? I don't know, it's not something I think too much about. I love it when people enjoy what I write, and when they get really wrapped up in my books. I saw that a bit with 'A Very Corporate Affair', and it was thrilling.
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on two books. One is a sequel to Glitterball, called Glitterball On Tour. The other is the start of a new series. It doesn't have a title yet.
Who are your favorite authors?
I love Jeffrey Archer, E L James, Ruth Rendell, Agatha Christie, Sylvia Day. I like the storytellers, the raconteurs, far more than the denizens of purple prose.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I could write in bed if I wanted to-just sayin! I don't think my two dogs, Lola and Louis would be terribly impressed if I did that.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love travelling. now that I don't have my salons, I'm like a caged bird set free.
Apart from holidays, I'm a bit of a homebody. I like making my garden look pretty and have dabbled a little in arts and crafts.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Often via Facebook. Sometimes friends recommend books that they've enjoyed.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, as an adult, it was The Beauty and the Blonde. At school, no.
What is your writing process?
I draw up a plot, and the characters on a sheet of paper, give it all a coat of looking at, then start.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I read voraciously as a child. The one that I fell in love with was A Little Princess.
How do you approach cover design?
I pick a theme from the book. I started out by creating my own covers, but nowadays I use a professional cover designer.
I've had to do quite a lot of design, and creative stuff over the years as a salon owner, so I feel as though I've got a pretty decent eye for it.
What are your six favorite books, and why?
A little Princess (first book I fell in love with)
Kane and Abel by Jeffrey Archer (first book I sat up all night to read)
All of Ruth Rendells books.
Fifty shades of Grey (adored the characterisation, and it was the first book I read more than once)
I am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes. It's not my usual genre at all, but I read it on a recommendation. I was gripped.
Tribe by D McMahon. I Just loved this.
What do you read for pleasure?
I try not to read while I'm writing, but after finishing a book, I have a read-fest. I read anything and everything, although I'm not keen on vampire stories or anything gruesome.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My iPad at home, kindle on holiday.
