Interview with Dayo Benson

Who are your favorite authors?
This is really hard to answer because I have favourite books rather than favourite authors. But recently I've been reading a lot of Kristin Billerbeck and Denise Hunter. And I really admire Francine Rivers, Karen Kingsbury and Melody Carlson.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The fact that it's a brand new day with new opportunities and new possibilities.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Chilling with my husband, playing with our daughters, eating (love a good meal), reading, listening to music...
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Usually just by browsing on Amazon. I've come across some great books that way e.g. Baggage Claim by Amanda Tru.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was only about a page long because I ran out of steam. And it wasn't very good. I wrote my first full story as an assignment at school. I enjoyed the process but I didn't think it was that good until some of my friends started passing it around to read. That's when I thought 'wow, someone likes what I wrote.'
What is your writing process?
Create a pretty detailed plot then sit down whenever I get the chance and just write. When I get to the last bullet point in my plot outline, the book is finished and I can celebrate. Then I start all over again with a new book.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No, but as a child I read whatever I could get my hands on. I read lots of Enid Blyton, C.S. Lewis and Francine Pascal, and I loved them all.
Books that have had a huge impact on me include:
- the Bible (my guide to life)
- Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers (it inspired me to write whatever is on my heart)
- To Kill a Mockingbird (I read it out of compulsion as a teenager at school but it taught me a lot about prejudices)
- Famous Five Series by Enid Blyton (it instilled in me a love for adventure and fast paced plots)
How do you approach cover design?
My husband designs them for me. He's incredible!!!
What do you read for pleasure?
Anything with a fast paced plot and a good helping of romance. If it has an inspirational message too that's the icing on the cake.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Kindle, and I read on my phone too, using the kindle app.
Describe your desk
It's a mess so I rarely write there. I write with my laptop on my knees, ha ha.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Because I want to tell stories and I'm too impatient to wait on a publishing contract that might take years to come or might never come at all. If you can live your dream your own way, go for it!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating characters and scenarios. Plotting out the whole novel. Sitting down to write that first word, which grows into a sentence, which grows into a paragraph, then a chapter, then a whole book! Writing the last word of the book and knowing you've completed a project is an incredible feeling. There are lots of joys. I can't give just one.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. I appreciate anyone who takes a chance on my books. Writing is fun in itself, but readers and fans make writing worthwhile.
