Interview with De Angelo R. Moody

When did you first start writing?
After a culmination of challenges and set backs in my life professionally and personally, I found my self near death, recovering from surgery, reflecting, depressed, and feeling that I hadn't lived my life yet. I had only managed to survive, maintain, and provide a very comfortable lifestyle for others. Outside of my children, very little to none of what I did to earn a living or who I cared and provided for gave any fulfillment. I didn't even live in the climate or geographical location of my preference. This is when a calling, a passion from deep within said, "MAKE A CHANGE, MAKE A DRASTIC CHANGE!". This was write around January of 2010.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When I am done!! No, really I don't know what my greatest joy of writing would be at this point. However, I get tremendous joy from the profound affects my teachings and experiences are having on others and myself. Not only do I strive to practice what I teach, I also strive to remain a student of it all as well.
What are you working on next?
Now that we are preparing to roll out Un-Broken and the first books and workbook of The Process of Becoming series. I plan to follow up with a second series called, Root 4 De and maybe a fiction.
What is your writing primarily about?
Education, reasoning, reflecting, thinking, and doing. My goal is to prove to you, that the impossible is possible and help you to prove it for yourself by achieving it. Our Social-Emotional Learning and Temperament training encapsulates ones attitude, skills, feelings, and mindsets. As well as, their convergent and divergent thinking; thus, helping them to succeed in school, career, and life.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The desire to actually live life and not just exist in it, but do something beautiful and meaningful with it. For me that is helping others to solve their problems and not just go through life paying bills, working, accumulating stuff, defining themselves based on titles, indebt, unhappy, and dying in debt.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first book I had ever read was the autobiography of Malcom X. Until getting my hands on this book, I had never experienced reading a book cover to cover and not being able to put it down. He like me, understood the challenges of being mixed, wanting to do and become something more than what others thought and wanted him to be. From his strength's to his weaknesses, I could empathize with his life step for step. Malcolm X is the reason I still wear a wrist watch and will have a profound affect on others beyond my own lifetime.
How do you approach cover design?
I reflect upon the soul or spirit of the content I am preparing to share. Once I have identified this, I like to develop a vivid outline and description of what the cover should express. From there I have some artists from 99 design and other resources to work up a draft or enhance my own draft.
Describe your desk
Clean and orderly, until I sit down.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up abandoned and illiterate on the streets of D.C. There are things I've seen and been exposed to that most will go their entire lives never having known. While I feel no child or anyone for that matter should have to endure such experiences. It has giving me an appreciation and perspective of life and what it takes to prosper, face down challenges, and comeback from devastating setbacks; while remaining an humane humanitarian. These experiences serves as an incredibly powerful tool in my writing and speaking.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Well, these 2 new series, "The Process of Becoming & Root 4 De", were initially driven by my desire to ensure my children's generation and those that follow knows and implements the disciplines, ethics, and principles that makes us special as an individual and as representatives of the whole of humanity. However, as I pushed to bang out the first few books of The Process of Becoming, an imaginable betrayal occurred. This occurrence challenged everything I have amassed the last 20 years; ranging from my marriage, health, business, and finances. This devastation has brought about an epiphany within me, and I am putting it all on the line. There is no turning back for me, nor should it be for you. Now this has become a journey I take with you all. There is no me without you! #LetMeLive
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had a near death experience that required emergency surgery. While in recovery at John's Hopkins, I decided to answer my calling to teach. The consensus was I needed to tell my story. So I wrote my childhood biography, "Un-Broken". Less than an hour of querying, I was picked up by a legendary agent in NYC. Right out of the gate they were talking movie, now I knew we had something good. Immediately they had me do a rewrite. More and more the focus moved away from the message and purpose of me writing the book to what I would call the sensationalization of the buffoonery and foolishness that I shared of my life. This would have been fine, if I were an author seeking to be known and have a crack at that most coveted New York Times Best Sellers List. I tried to shut up and roll with it, become famous and make a boatload of money. Then I could set out to help all the people I d@mn well please! But, after being vetted, it was time to sign on the dotted line. The pie had already been divided up and my percentage of my book, of my childhood, my pain, my strugle, and my achievements wasn't even worth listing, if you ask me. As an entrepreneur and on general principle, only a fool would have signed on that line. The explanation was, "You are an unknown. This will put you out there and you will make your money on the next project". I didn't know if I had it in me to write another one. I took the hard way and decided to build my own business, platform, branding, product, and services. It comes down to what you are mad of, why you write, and what you want. If you consider how of the work you have to do outside of writing in traditional publishing vs the Indie. You may come to the conclusion I did, traditional publishing is fine, just not for me! I believe Indie Publishing is the way of the future, especially entrepreneurs!!!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I don’t know yet. But I am excited about teaming up with a distributor that knows what it takes to put out a quality piece of work and have such loyalty to Indies like myself.
What do your fans mean to you?
I don’t look at people as fines. I have a firm and grounded understanding of the importance of customer satisfaction. Like I said in previous questions, "There is no me without you".
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Helping and teaching others, hanging out with my children, working out, and beach bumming it.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was about the greatest Christmas I had ever had with all of my family on my mother's side; specifically my Grandfather being alive and present.
What is your writing process?
Contemplation, reflecting, research, procrastination, procrastination, procrastination, research, contemplation, writing, trash, write, trash, procrastination, and than I find my groove and rock n roll!
