Interview with Aya DeAniege

What do your fans mean to you?
My readers mean a great deal to me. Some have been reading my stories since I was stumbling about, new to a keyboard and barely finishing the thoughts I started. Some are new, just now discovering me, and they all mean a lot. Without readers, I'd be nothing more than a crazy, overly emotional person in the corner talking to herself.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Free books seem to work quite well. The marketing for ebooks changes, sometimes month to month, so I do research on what's currently working rather than assuming that what worked before will work now.
Describe your desk
Messy. Multi-vitamins and water, or I'd forget to take them. A planner, or else I'd forget what dates I completed a work, published it, or scheduled it for a giveaway/promotion. A World Binder, with pages for each of my worlds in there, added to when a snippet comes to me. Usually a cat or two, either playing with things on the desk, or sitting in front of the monitor, pretending I'm not annoyed that they're in the way.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I really didn't think a big house publisher would take up an author whose stories are well known for being dark and angsty with characters being tormented in all kinds of way.

I had considered a small to mid sized publisher as well, but it seemed everywhere I turned I heard stories from author friends caught up in yet another closure. Loosing out on royalties and generally getting poked in the eye as the publisher said, "oh, we're not hurting you yet."

So, I went with indie publishing to retain control over my own books.
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing and telling stories for as long as I can remember. I wrote my first (very bad) novel when I was thirteen. My second was complete by the time I was fifteen, and then it was almost ten years before I finished another story. I'd start them, get almost done and then not be able to bring myself to finish them.

Writing start to finish has been on and off since then, with these past three or so years being the best. Twelve completed novel-length works in thirty-six months.

Decades of practice means that I can now write a novel in a month, but only if life and health don't get in the way.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I'm working on two trilogies at the moment, the second Trilogy of the Contracted series, and Wraith's Rebellion. I swore I'd not write either of them, but the characters started talking loudly. The Contracted trilogy is written traditionally, on my computer. Wraith's Rebellion is being written on my phone, with a smaller screen and slower writing so it has an entirely different tone it.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing I'm sleeping or at the day job. Even doing some errands or chores around the house. When not doing important life things or writing, I am editing, marketing, and on the very rare occasion I'll play a video game while trying to sort out a scene for a book.
What is your writing process?
Sip coffee, move the cat, write a sentence or two, move the cat, sip coffee, sigh and move the cat again. Sometimes I get on good runs, when the cats are napping at opposite ends of the apartments because they've had enough of one another.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up all over, no stable house or home until I was into my teens. Then the setting was stable, but that was about it. I've been told that's why I don't write fluff pieces. My characters tend to have destructive backgrounds and so far all their troubles are caused by things from their pasts that they ran from instead of dealt with.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
All I remember are elves living in trees. Their forest was about to be cut down by humans and the heroine had to stop them. I'm not certain if I ever finished the book, or how I might have worked out the plot. I was seven or eight at the time, and had only just learned that creative writing was a thing, that the stories I had been telling could be written down.
