Interview with Dean White

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Knowing that the simple but effective power behind the words that I write and how they can make such a positive change in somebody’s life! The greatest joy is the positive feedback I get. I also like it when someone asks for a signed copy of my book.
What do your fans mean to you?
It is what keeps me going. Once complete strangers on the other side of the world and now we are connected. What a great way to make a living!
What are you working on next?
Apart from another book?
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family, the fact that I am alive and that I have finally discovered my purpose in life and doing what I love.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
What, there is spare time beyond writing, nobody told me this! Apart from running businesses, I like to spend time with my family. Walking, going to the beach, eating in nice restaurants, picnics, barbeques, swimming, kayaking, jet skiing, the list is endless. There was a reason we moved from the UK to Australia.
What is your writing process?
a. Plan Phase - I start with the whiteboard in my office and sketch out a plan and story board. I then brainstorm ideas and write down a high-level framework (areas to cover, headings, chapters, etcetera). I research any areas that I think might be needed to re-enforce the content for my readers.
b. Writing Phase – I commit to working some hours every day, and I write and write and then write some more. I avoid the temptation to critique anything at this stage. I find that to prevent any form of ‘writer's block’ I simply get into a routine of pouring out the words. If I start critiquing at this stage, I am no longer ‘in flow’ and my words per day slow down.
c. Proof-Reading Phase – Now it is time to read, review, cull, critique, check, read and read again. My books go out to various people, who cast a fresh set of eyes over my content. I have learned to take all feedback (good and bad) as feedback (which is good). In the early days, I took offence to what was being said to me.
d. Publish Phase – My books go out in all directions including physical printing, Amazon, Smashwords and more. I, therefore, have variances of the original book that cater for the different channels. Thankfully, when you get everything correct for Smashwords, I know it is covered for numerous retailers.
How do you approach cover design?
As soon as I embark on my project one of the first things that I do is to start the draft cover design. I then print it out, which in turn inspires me to keep writing, this certainly helps on those tough days. The design will evolve throughout the writing phase and will most likely end up being completely different to the first layout. I test the final designs with my fans and family. My six-year old daughter is the harshest critic!
Describe your desk
Uncluttered and functional. It only feels like it was a few years ago that I had a huge PC tower next to my legs, a huge monitor on my desk and cables everywhere. Nowadays, two slim LCD monitors, one Microsoft Surface, wireless keyboard and mouse! Everything I need is on that one device, all the tools of my trade. There is one exception, my trusty rather worn-out paperback dictionary/thesaurus.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The freedom to deliver my message to the world so that I can help ordinary everyday people to grow. I have heard that so many people try the traditional publishing route, only to be rejected numerous times. No thank you. I have not got time for that. I recently went to a traditional book store just a few days ago and purchased three books. I did not have much change left over after handing over a $100 note! Written words help to make the world a better place. Books should be made available to all people, also being affordable helps.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I have a vast ‘book’ library - physical, electronic and audio books. My five favorite books are:
i. The Success Principles by Jack Canfield.
ii. Living an Exceptional Life by Jim Rohn.
iii. Over the Top by Zig Ziglar.
iv. How to Become a Millionaire by Brian Tracy.
v. Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki.
