Interview with Deb Whittam

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first book I ever read was Watership Down by Richard Adams and I recall at the time thinking how magnificent it was to read the thoughts and feeling of the rabbits. I think this showed me how effective the imagination can be in creating a whole world in to which one can escape.
What do you read for pleasure?
I'm very random in what I read for pleasure and to be honest I chose most of favorite books based on the cover design, I also have a tendency to read series out of order. My favorite genres of writing are the supernatural and mystery, though I do have a soft spot for romance.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I think the benefit of Smashwords is its ability to read an extended audience base through its distribution networks. The simplicity of the platform has simplified this process, allowing me to read a larger audience base and therefore showcase my work to more readers.
Who are your favorite authors?
Due to the fact that my reading is so diversified I have a lot of favorite authors. Jack Higgins has been a favorite for years and I have read all of his books but I also love Stephenie Meyer. I think her book The Chemist was one of the best I have ever read. Other authors I love are David Eddings, Robert Rankin and Bernard Cornwall.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Currently we are travelling around Australia in a caravan, so when I am not writing I am exploring. We decided to undertake this trip as we had never really traveled in our own backyard and we have been amazed by the natural wonders we have discovered.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I discover most of the books I read either through a random search on Smashwords or through recommendations on Goodreads. Both of these platforms have a transparent review system in place, which makes it easy for you to discover books which will appeal.
How do you approach cover design?
I think cover design is one of the most important aspects of publishing your book online, so I have a very systematic approach. I take all of the photographs which appear on my covers, so I will spend hours searching through my archives for one which I feel conveys the mood of the book. I try to keep the design simple and the colors vibrant.
Describe your desk
Its strange but my desk would best be described as clutter city - I find when I tidy it up I just can't write and will then spend a day destroying the order in a bid to get the creative juices flowing once again. I think each writer has their own process for creation and mine just happens to require a mess.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the suburbs of South Australia and while my childhood was pretty normal we did move around a lot. I think this contributed to my love of the fantasy and supernatural - for every time we moved I would imagine the back history of the people we met. We even lived next to a private zoo on one occasion which had tigers.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I was very young and continued through my teenage years but when I had my children I stopped for a long time. It was kind of a surprise when I sat down one day and realized I was writing a story, for it hadn't been a conscious decision, rather it just happened.
