Interview with Dan Leicht
Published 2014-01-18.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Thinking of what to write next.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It was called "Crazy Town" and I was in elementary school. All six words I could spell were included above my best drawings at the time. Since then I've learned a few more words, but my drawing abilities haven't changed much.
What is your writing process?
A lot of black coffee and violins.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I bought a Kindle Fire HD a year ago and have spent more money on books than I ever thought possible. Of course there is a newer version out already, but I've grown quite attached to my kindle. It's hard to find me somewhere without it.
Describe your desk
Brown, wood...oh, what's on it? Let me check. There's my black laptop, a blue desk light, empty Folgers containers holding both pens and notes. The drawers are filled with notebooks, dozens upon dozens. The wall in front of my desk is covered in post-its and paper with various plot points written down. A few books sitting on the edge, both Tolkien and Hammett. I also have a hole-punch sitting on the right side, I'm not to sure why, but I suppose there isn't much sense putting it anywhere else.
When did you first start writing?
When I first learned how to write. Like I said with "Crazy Town" I was in elementary school. I used to use my lunch money to buy white hard cover blank books from the cart in the cafeteria so that I could write new stories in them. I'd write comic books and always had notebooks to fill up. In middle school I started to write an ongoing series of comics inside composition notebooks, just writing them for myself at first, when I eventually showed them to friends everyone has seemed to enjoy them. Maybe that's why I've kept writing for so long, it's something I enjoy that has made others happy as well. I remember one of the first words I learned to write being "Boo" and when I went to my friends house (we would write together) he told me that if I just added a couple letters I would have the word "Book", needless to say I suddenly had a ghost that could read.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My character Charles "The Solver" Splints is one I really enjoy writing. I like the idea of having a character with no rules and someone that is willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. I write the Splints stories as ones I love to read. That underdog that stops at nothing as he trudges along while fighting off his own problems as he tries to solve another person's. I love sitting down to write and knowing that anything can happen.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The process. It's one thing to see your final product, but the best part is having your mind stuck in a story all day and jotting down new ideas while you're either at work or just not at your desk.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Coffee.
What do you read for pleasure?
A lot of things. I enjoy detective fiction a lot, and pretty much anything by Stephen King. I read comics and am a huge Deadpool fan. Also, the book "Pulp" by Bukowski, I've read that quite a few times, always a great read.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've always had the love for writing and being an indie author let's me share it with everyone else. It's a great way to get my words out there in hopes that others will enjoy reading my stories.
