Interview with DeepaBalasubramanian

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It's all about knowing and writing your character. I absolutely love knowing my character as i build my story.
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on a story set in current times. Once again, my central protagonist is a woman of strong mind and fragile heart.
Who are your favorite authors?
Harlan Coben and Cecelia Ahern
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I always get up with a plot in my mind. Of course, we cannot write all the time, thanks to our domestic and professional responsibilities. But the minute i get time, i jump right at writing.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am constantly spending time with my family and friends. I also love catching up on all the American TV series. Shows like Castle, Downton Abbey and Mad Men have blown me away. I think the values are definitely improving top notch with small screen writing in the United States.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I solely go with my favorites first.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was the first small attempt but i cherish the first page written. Maybe i should finish it now.
What is your writing process?
Quite simple. I have the outline first. Even if i'm unable to arrive at a conclusion while planning, i go with the flow. Sometimes your characters will tell you their story and where they are headed possibly.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre.

It had a massive impact on my thinking process. I believe women make for great central protagonists. Jane Eyre was that.
How do you approach cover design?
I pick an important aspect in the story and try to transcend it on the cover.
What are your three favorite books, and why?
Jane Eyre - For Jane and Mr Rochester's roller coaster relationship ride
Tell No One - Coben surprises you in the most unthinkable way with his endings
Kidnapped - I had the first hand exposure to Highlanders and Lowlanders and the great friendships in English style.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mystery and Romance
What is your e-reading device of choice?
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Social Media for sure. Also the forums where authors get to interact with both the readers as well as reviewers.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Hyderabad. This had influenced me in a very minimal way as i had traveled more on work.
When did you first start writing?
I began penning stories in 2011, during my maternity sabbatical. I have always wanted to write and this was an excellent chance to make use of both time and resources. I want to thank my son to have indirectly given me an opportunity to pursue creative aspirations.
What motivated you to become an author?
I think there is a lot of scope for individuals to express themselves and grow in this space. Sometimes, people connect more to everyday stories and emotions. As a writer, i get to dissect all kinds of emotions and put them inside my characters. I just love writing and there is nothing else i would love to do better.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I'm loving all the great work you guys are doing, helping the authors to get pitched on a global level. I have immense faith that my story will reach out to the reading world faster with Smashwords.
