Interview with Deepa Christina Jayaraj

Published 2019-06-14.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing at the age of 7. I used to write poems and songs then.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I find pleasure in exploring undiscovered worlds. Setting a character to life and giving it a mind of its own is the most interesting phase.
What are you working on next?
I am planning to continue the series titled "WhatsApp Adventures". The first one "A Slippery Affair" has been published.
Who are your favorite authors?
Enid Blyton and Agatha Christie-I couldn't choose between those two. My other favourite series include Sherlock Holmes, Perry Mason, Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys besides comics like Tintin, Asterix, Lucky Luke and Archies. I also like the works of Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Shakespeare and R L Stevenson.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes. The first story I read was "The Caravan Family" by Enid Blyton when I was about 6 years old. It made me interested in farm life.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read mystery and adventure stories as well as comics.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in India but seldom are my writings set there. I grew up reading British Fiction and that influenced me.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love reading books, listening to music, learning languages and playing with my pet.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was a story I wrote for the Bal Shree Award competition, titled "Cover Story". It focussed on environmental issues.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
St. Clare's, Malory Towers, Mystery, Adventure, Famous Five and Secret Seven Series by Enid Blyton; Miss Marple series by Agatha Christie. I liked the English sense of honour portrayed in both the school series. As for the others, mystery has always been my favourite genre.
