Interview with S.F. Swem

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Our imagination was going nuts and we decided to write it down. The Demesne series is the first joint venture. Writing is a release of tension though it can cause its own when a scene or action just doesn’t seem to work. Great diversion from real life. We have fun acting out a scene at times working out dialogue. The greatest joy is knowing someone enjoyed the story after it has been released to the public.
Who are your favorite authors?
Ah, we have many, we have a couple shelves of Ann McCaffrey, Mercedes Lackey as well as Victoria holt, Robert Heinlien, Poul Anderson, Terry Brooks, and Edgar Rice Burroughs. Those are the most prominent.
What can readers expect when they open your book?
We write in first person. Some say it pulls the reader in, some say it is difficult. No graphic discriptions of blood or sex. We tried to keep it family orientated.
There is magic all around. Fun, Entertaining are the words that best discribe. At least that is what we think.
What is your favorite quote?
Steve: I live in reality and when reality is done for the day, it is time to get a way.
Detra: "Just because one does not process sensory information and replay it the same as everyone else, does not mean that there is a lack in comprehension or interest." Ashida Kim
What do you read for pleasure?
Science Fiction and Fantasy. Magic, Dragons and Spaceships have their appeal.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
We each have iPad's with iBooks and Kendle apps on them. Knowing what the books look like on the devices or apps helps when we are preparing to publish also.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Return of the Guardian which morphed recently into Martis, part of the Cassiopeia Adventures.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Have Space suite will Travel, the impact it had awakened the beast within. Reading became a passion.
How do you approach cover design?
Steve: I turn that task over to Detra.
Detra: I search pictures I think fit the story. I like to capture the essence of the book. Sometimes the results are not received well and I go back to the drawing board so to speak.
