Interview with Dena Celeste

Published 2015-03-18.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read romance, for the most part. I enjoy many sub-genres of it though. Erotic, of course, but also contemporary, young adult, sci-fi/fantasy, and paranormal.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Well, I wound up getting a Kindle Paperwhite to replace my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.0. I can now read in any/every lighting, and that thrills me to bits!
Describe your desk
Well, I have 2 desks, sort of. One is a portable lap desk, and it has zebra stripes on it, and a pillow attached to the bottom. One is a folding table-top which I can also put anywhere, and it's just plain black.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in South Florida, where it is hot and muggy and frequently swampy. Also, mosquitoes are the state bird. It influenced my writing a lot when it came to settings. My settings tend to be swampy, woodsy, or a city with lots of canals and lakes, and there's usually an element of heat. Unless they're inside with air-conditioning, or have been rained upon and then walk inside where there's air-conditioning, no one really gets cold in my tales.
When did you first start writing?
In chronological order: I wrote (very simple) songs at age 3. Poetry from age 6. And fanfiction at age 13. Original fiction at age 17.

So, essentially, from the time I could hold a writing implement, my creative soul made itself known.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I have these people talking in my head. They have to get out somehow, and this seems like a good method. It was either that or exorcism.
What do your fans mean to you?
Oh, I love my fans! It feels weird to call them that, because I want all my fans to be friends of mine, and many of my friends are actually fans! They mean the world, because if someone likes my stories, it means that my characters came as alive for them as they did for me. They are AMAZING!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend time at my day job, with my husband, with my dog, and usually somewhere in there I'll be engrossed in a book, or watching a favorite TV show. I've also taken up crocheting, but I'm a beginner yet.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I'll start with the authors I like and find recommendations from there. Sometimes I'll just browse and read many, many, MANY samples for something that grabs me.
Who are your favorite authors?
Okay, well, in no particular order: Jacqueline Carey, Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb, Nalini Singh, Christine Feehan, Jean Johnson, Karen Marie Moning, Rachel Vincent. There are more, but I'll stop there.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Seeing what adventures come next!
