Interview with Denise Lammi

What made you want to explore this fictional world and what gave you the inspiration to write this novel?
I created the fictional world so I could explore the influence of illogical fear on human behaviour. In the story, behaviour related to unwarranted or misdirected fear is referred to as “khaos”.
The opportunity to combine imagination and logic was irresistible. I wrote in the “young adult” genre because I thought it was the best platform to facilitate an entertaining and inspirational story.
Tell us about the book genre. Why does the story description say it was written for young adults but may be enjoyed by everyone?
It’s a unique book with respect to genre. Much of the story takes place in a small prairie town. There are sci-fi and alternative history components; along with adventure, humour and inspiration. With a teenager as the main character, Lucid World delivers an entertaining feel-good read for all ages.
What gave you the idea for "khaos"; a contagion which affects thoughts and emotions?
I’m fascinated about the idea of negative emotions and where they come from. As humans, when we evolved we needed to have a fight or flight response or we would never have survived. But now, it’s so seldom that we have life threatening situations that require the fight or flight emotion, but yet we continue to apply it. If you consider any negative emotion and drill down to discover the cause, you’ll find it relates to fear. Illogical fear is khaos.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Lethbridge (Alberta, Canada) and raised in a small town nearby (Picture Butte). My father worked for the Picture Butte Sugar Factory (until it closed). I attended the University of Lethbridge and graduated with a Bachelor of Management Arts. I articled in Lethbridge and received my designation as a Chartered Accountant. I worked in Lethbridge for several years before I moved to the west coast (Vancouver, BC).
Growing up in Southern Alberta definitely influenced my writing. Many of the story’s scenes and characters are loosely based on places and personalities I recall from my childhood in Picture Butte.
What do you want your readers to experience during their read of Lucid World?
I want my readers to be both entertained and challenged while reading Lucid World. Entertained by the story, characters and plot; and challenged to consider how khaos impacts them.
What do you hope readers will take away with them after they read Lucid World?
I want my readers to consider how unwarranted fear negatively impacts their lives. When they feel emotions such as anger, self-doubt, worry... I want them to stop and remember that khaos can be controlled.
