Interview with Thomas J. Mason

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am still a computer geek. Despite being retired, I fix neighbors', family's and friends' computers. My computer is constantly being upgraded. The greater the complexity, the greater chance of failure. Right now, the computer I use for editing video is at it's simplest and it's most powerful. Project files are on one RAID array, temporary files are on a separate drive and composed video files are written to a second RAID array. Now I have no excuse not to edit my backlogged family videos.
When my computer is up and running, as it is now, I sing Irish and Scottish traditional music and accompany myself on my Irish flat drum, a bodhrán.
How do you approach cover design?
First: What is the concept of the book? What is the effect the author wants to create?
Second: What image do I have in mind that will convey the essence of the book?
Third: How do I fit the Title and Author's Name into or around the cover image.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Terry Pratchett's Discworld series and Francis Scott Card's Ender series.
They are speculative fiction and the authors are able to stretch their imaginations while writing and mine while reading.
