Interview with Detonya KAN

Describe your desk
Pretty tidy, I feel, with some of my favorite pictures I've drawn posted up here and there. When I have images of my characters hung up I feel inspired to write out their stories, as if they are depending on me.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
First and foremost, The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde. It was fun and tragic to my teenage self and really had an impression on me well into college. Really though, the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice were the books I really enjoyed growing up with, specifically The Vampire Lestat and Blackwood Farm. They were funny and dark, all while appealing to that romantic goth girl I had been too. After those it'd have to be Catch 22 by Joseph Heller because it was kooky and fun all while drilling in the chaos that happens when people are sent out to kill strangers. Lastly would have to be this childrens book series that I loved when I was very young called The Enchanted Forest Chronicles: Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede. A tomboy princess living with dragons? Why wouldn't I have wanted to read that?!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Houston, Texas. I was always a quiet kid, lost in my on world or in worlds I loved. I've always loved stories, whether it be in a book, or a movie or even a video game. It's only natural, I feel, that I would end up writing a few things myself.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Drawing anything from sketches, to full on illustration pieces and even comics.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
When I was younger my friends and I enjoyed this game where one person would write a paragraph and then the next person would create the next paragraph, and so on and so forth. They would end up as ridiculous stories but were fun nonetheless. Eventually it led me to create a few short stories in high school that my friends would read, mostly involving cute characters and their love triangles but it was never something I'd think of making into something I could publish.
When did you first start writing?
If I think back I've always loved writing but taking it serious is a fairly new prospect. When I started writing however, working on an original story, started when I first began college in 2008 because a very dear friend suggested I should and he has good ideas that I'd be stupid not to follow. Since college took a lot of my time however I have never dedicated so much time to writing until after I graduated in 2013.
What is your writing process?
I draw, first and foremost, to get a feel of the characters and their primary environments. There's a lot of brainstorming that takes place there and I honestly feel that the brainstorming stage never truly ends, even when you're already writing.
What's the story behind your latest book?
O.U.R.S. Chronicler: Defiant is a series actually so each story will unfold more and more crucial information, gradually leading to the final chapters. I've always been inspired by pop culture, of stories that take place in the same universe, and that's what I'm meaning to do. It involves time travel, fantasy worlds, science fiction and ultimately destiny, which can neither be good nor bad, it just is.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Telling the story all the way through so that you love, or even hate, the characters but end up feeling attached to them in some way when it's over.
What do your fans mean to you?
If I ever have any fans, I hope that they knew how important they are, not so much to me, but the characters I want to write, their lives; without an audience they won't exist.
