Interview with John Burnham

Why do I write?
Because I think I can offer something different, that people aren't likely to have seen elsewhere. I'm not a lover of most popular culture, so I try and create stories notable for not fitting well known genre's, or being a parody of them. My story 'They call her Petal' is a tale of a tough heroine dealing with a criminal gang. Nothing unusual about that, as literature and film are churning out stories of heroine's beating up the bad guys, but what if the bad guys were girls? That's the case with the crooks Petal deals with, and she deals with them violently. Anyone who finds that offensive could ask themselves if men being beaten up should be presented as entertainment, as it so often is. Even as a triumph for feminism, as has been the reaction of many to the Wonder Woman movie. Petal is not a heavy weight piece of social commentary, it's a short tale where I have a bit of fun replacing the stereotype fictional bad guy with bad girls. So it's not a serious piece of fiction, just a bit of pulp? Right, just like what it's a parody of. Wonder Woman, if you're reading this, you'd be no match for Petal!
