Interview with Francesca Serafini

Is Francesca Serafini your real name or Pen Name?
Francesca is my Pen name. As I write for several different genre's it's virtually impossible to use the same name. For example, my Children's books have a different Author name to the Erotica and Relationship issue books, then of course I am presently writing a murder mystery. I pondered over this for such a long time, we are all wanting to be known by our real name but when dealing with children's minds, the last thing you need is a Mother or Father having to answer questions about..."Why does that naughty lady have the same name as the one who writes kids books?" :)

What other Pen names do you have?
SF Beckenham is my pen name for anything I write in the Real Estate arena. I spent many years in the Real Estate Industry, and once again, I couldn't really have the same name as the Author of Erotica!....Tongues would wag for sure! Who will take an Author or Real Estate seriously when they see the same name on what some call an 'Unsavory' book cover? :)
Where do you write your best?
I have a few projects I am working on. It depends on my mood. For example, with the novel I am working on, I must be completely alone, the darker the room and the less distractions, the easier the thoughts and ideas flow. If I am working on my real estate books, I can work anywhere, noisy coffee shops, a tavern with a band, or just my own home, but if I am out with my laptop or notepad, I look for a table and seating where my back can be up against the wall. I can't work if I feel someone is looking over my shoulder. When I work on my children's books, often having distractions like children chattering or running about, actually helps with the ideas and free flow.
What is your writing process?
This depends on what I am working on, like any other author. When I am writing on Real Estate, I just pick a subject and off I go. I have been in the industry for so long that I don't even have to think about it. But with the murder mystery I am presently working on, I start with a general outline, main character and their family and friends, have a notepad with me all the time and I could be sitting in a coffee shop or doctor surgery, over hear a a conversation and out comes the notepad. Quite often what I initially plan doesn't necessarily work out, it could go off in a completely different direction.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I wrote a poem when my friend died of Cancer. I cried as I wrote, it was a terrible time, she was a lovely lady and her life taken at such a young age.

I don't write poetry often, but when I get the urge, it's pretty strong and I must put pen to paper immediately.

One poem is when my teenage son left home and moved to another state. He called me to ask me to write him a 'Reference'! I had to laugh at this, he was the most untidiest person I know (apart from his twin brother) That night I put pen to paper, sat up in bed and wrote with an energy I didn't know I had. It turned out beautifully and all that read it had a good laugh.
How do you approach cover design?
Not an easy one. It's like asking an Artist what they will charge for their painting. It's well known that artists have no trouble painting and drawing, but when it comes to pricing their art, that is a different thing altogether. Coming up with a Title and sub title is the difficult part with Book Covers. Once that is decided the rest is easy, the juices start to flow with my imagination going wild, in no time at all I know what images will be on the cover
With your Children's books, do you write and illustrate them as well?
Yes, if an Author is also artistic, they should attempt to do their own artworks. The Author knows what the characters are feeling, and can transfer those feelings into their illustrations. Whereas if they are paying someone else to do the illustrations, often there are numerous changes and hard feelings can develop between them. So Authors, if you can illustrate, get your sketch pads out and attempt it yourself! Treat it as a fun project, not a chore :)
Do you draw on your own experiences when thinking of a new project?
Absolutely! Life is full of adventure whether we know it or not. If you look back at your school days for instance, you are sure to find a story, whether it be your own or something that happened to a family in the area. The world is your oyster!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
In today's digital world, there are so many opportunities. The internet is full of website willing to promote your work, and Smashwords is where Authors should start.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the highlands of PNG . My parents were Sydney people. After the World War 11, my father returned to PNG with my mother and brother. I was later born in Rabaul. We had a fabulous fun filled childhood. We had to make fun ourselves, there were no Parks, Picture theatres (till later) or TV. Just ourselves, friends, heaps of trees to climb and our own imagination!! I think that is why many of us became artists and writers.
