Interview with Deanna Kahler

Published 2015-05-26.
What do you read for pleasure?
I enjoy reading romance, mystery/suspense, fantasy, paranormal and self-help books. Some of my favorite authors are Mary Higgins Clark, Nicholas Sparks, Piers Anthony and Dr. Wayne W. Dyer. I also loved "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne and have been amazed to see the Law of Attraction at work in my own life.

After having some unusual paranormal experiences after a friend passed away, I became passionate about researching the afterlife and spirit communication. It's touching to read stories about the signs other people have received from their deceased loved ones. My experience inspired me to write "Echoes of Paradise," and although my book is fiction, I hope to inspire and encourage others who have lost loved ones.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy is hearing how I've affected readers. I love to receive feedback on how I touched someone's heart, inspired them or got them thinking.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to spend time outdoors with my family. Walking, bike riding and visiting parks are some of my favorite activities. I especially enjoy being near water because it gives me a sense of peace and serenity.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, the first story I wrote was in 3rd grade. It was called "Just Do Your Best" and was about a girl who was competing in a gymnastics competition on the balance beam and rings. My teacher loved it so much that she inspired me to continue writing -- and I've been writing ever since!
What is your writing process?
I do a lot of thinking before I sit down to write. I guess you could say most of my writing is done in my head first. Some of my best ideas have come to me while in the shower or lying in bed. Once I have a good idea of where the story will go, I sit at my computer and start typing it out.
Describe your desk
My desk is very neat and organized. You'll find a file holder, a copy of "The Associated Press Stylebook," a trophy, a business card holder and a glass mug that holds my pens. My computer is in the center of the desk. I have a phone to the left, with a small globe behind it.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Detroit area, but what has influenced my writing the most are the people I've met and the experiences I've had. Much of my writing is based on life events, challenges and triumphs. I truly write what I know and what I've learned. My goal is always to touch lives and inspire others.
When did you first start writing?
I was born writing -- LOL! Actually, I started writing as a child and have been writing ever since. It has always come naturally to me, and I consider it my gift and my passion.
