Interview with Adam Stark

What motivated you to become an indie author?
Well I've always been an indie artist in Hip Hop, so that transition for me was fairly simple!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
By giving me a platform to allow my work to be seen, and it's nice that it's available in many downloadable formats because I truly care about my fans. On top of that I do all of my (writing related) work for free because I want the fame much more than I'd want any money.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When I get to see people's reactions! I don't tell a soul about what I'm writing about until it is uploaded. I don't even give people a preview of my writings currently in progress because I value knowing that all of my work is not influenced by others (whether good or bad).
What do your fans mean to you?
EVERYTHING! I don't do any of my passion (writing) for any other reason. This is what I was born to do, to write and to do it extremely well, as well as to perform (Hip Hop). If I didn't grow up impressing people with my groundbreaking lyrics, metaphors and freestyles, I would have stopped writing altogether at a young age and discontinued.
Who are your favorite authors?
I don't have any specific, I just love any author/rapper/director who can have a story with amazing twists and great endings that make you think. Details details details. Extraordinary! Now this doesn't mean I love every story to be complicated and complex (hard to follow) but I certainly appreciate layered material.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family! Nothing else to say, I work all the time.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes it was in 1st grade it was about my some kind of monster that people were scared of, but once they talked to him they found out he was really nice.
What is your writing process?
I typically write the ending first, then I make notes for key events that need to take place in the story I'm writing. The beginning of my stories are almost always the last things that I write. I make notes all the time, seriously all the time. I'm always afraid of forgetting some ideas of mine so I make note of them to avoid forgetting them later.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I read that really made me think books can actually be cool, is 'Give A Boy A Gun'
When I was in Junior High, I read this book and I loved it because it was intense, and I especially loved that it has points of view from many different characters. That was an idea that I learned from and use to this day!
What do you read for pleasure?
I love reading theories on stories. The best examples to me are the movies: Donnie Darko, and Inception. There are plenty of theories for Donnie Darko's ending, all that rely on details within the movie to have the theory make sense, without the details they hold no merits.
And Inception is an incredible movie that is layered with many different possibilities to take from it. The theories on that movie are amazing to me, even the ones that are ruled out for not making enough sense... And I always appreciated director Stanley Kubrick by the way, every object and number in the background has a specific purpose for being there.
When did you first start writing?
My whole life I have been writing. It started out when I was a toddler it was stories, then as a young teen it was hip hop, then I got better and better at my craft and became one of the greatest MC's of all time. Now I just took my writing talent to a new home- book writing. PS- I'm never leaving Hip Hop alone, don't get me wrong.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Mostly from recommendations by people.
How do you approach cover design?
I go for something that can not be explained in one sentence!
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Give A Boy A Gun, Silence Of The Lambs, Tupac's journal, 1984, Brave New World.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Just my iPhone.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Honestly, I'm always doing my writing related work for free, so whatever method would get me the most exposure.
Describe your desk
I take my desk with me everywhere I go, it's my phone, I'm always writing notes in it, ideas. And it's always changing, so it's messy I'd say.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I moved a few times as a kid, I don't know if my environment really influenced me to write. I'd say it's really just my love for Hip Hop. Real Hip Hop pardon me. I love most old school rappers and some underground rappers. I hate almost all new school mainstream rappers.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It is my first time writing a full book, and it's not about me or Hip Hop. That was the main reason I wanted to do it, I am not a one trick pony. I can write something that takes a long time at a great length that is it's own story.
What are you working on next?
I'm always making new raps or songs with mixing/mastering producers I find. Or I perform a freestyle (improvisational).
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working, a ton.
Will you regret it if this newest book is a flop?
Yes and no. I would be upset at myself for letting down my fans, but happy that I tried regardless.
