Interview with Donna Maree Hanson

Who are your favorite authors?
Hard question. I have my old time favourites and the new ones that come up as I continue reading. I was a very keen fan of Stephen Donaldson. In particular I loved his duology, Mordant's Need. I'm a big fan of Australian fantasy, Glenda Larke, Trudi Canavan, Sara Douglass, Keri Arthur and CS Pacat. I also love Urusla LeGuin, Elizabeth Moon, Julian May, JD Robb (Nora Roberts), JR Ward, Anne Leckie and Nalo Hopkinson. More recently I have been captured by Lois McMaster Bujold. The Curse of Chalion has to be the best fantasy ever also her VorKosigan Series. Others include Neil Gaiman, Robin Hobb, George RR Martin, Mark Lawrence, Russell Kirkpatrick and Guy Gavriel Kay. I also read romance but my all time favourite is Georgette Heyer.
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on the edits/revisions for the next two installments in my dark fantasy series Dragon Wine. These books were written years ago but I'm only just now putting them out there.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. How could I forget. This story hasn't been published. It was practically a download from the ether. It featured a woman called Leila who was a resurrected human on a space ship with aliens. Apparently it was very feminist. In 2000 I didn't know there was a thing called feminist science fiction. It was also a romance and the beginning of a sprawling six book series. I will get back to this story one day. I was told by an author friend not to toss it.
When did you first start writing?
I first had the impulse to write when I was 19 or 20 years old. I actually started to write a story. I think it was a Star Wars story. But I felt that I was too stupid to write and also I had young children so I put the idea away. I've always had stories in my head. I used to think I had a mental problem because I had so many scenarios in my brain and I'd be off there with my stories. Then when I got to 40 years old and I was faced with going back to my job of auditing in government, I asked myself-What do you really want to do? And the answer was to write. And by the next weekend I had started on my first novel. It's been a long road. Lots of hard work.
What is your writing process?
Usually I start with an idea, a character or a scene. For many years I was a panster. I just wrote and the story unfolded, but somewhere along the line I'd try to sketch out a plan. So these days I do write little synopses of my ideas. Mostly I do this to get the idea out of my head. I also have a notebook that I put my ideas in for when I have time to write them. I have promised myself that if the story needs a map I will draw the map first. It will make my life a whole lot easier. Usually I write while possessed by the idea until the story is done. However, due to arthritis my writing time can be limited. Lucky for me I have a lot of novels written and they just need me to go back and revise them and they will be ready to send to my agent or indie publish.
