Interview with Doris Qualls

When did you first start writing?
I've written since I was a child but recently, in 2014 I decided to start writing books. So yes, I am a new author.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I actually have no fascination with zombies. I've tried to get into popular tv shows and books and they could not hold my interest. I had a very realistic dream one night about zombies (The scene in the grocery store in the beginning of book 1) and thought that it might be fun to write a book about it. I started writing and everyone encouraged me to publish. That is how the Infected series came to be.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has certainly opened the door to me, a new writer.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It is actually a hobby of mine. I love to read and have always loved essay writing. It is a creative outlet for me.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! If it weren't for those who have followed my series, I don't think I would have started on my next book! (The Road to Wickery Bridge)
Who are your favorite authors?
I love all of the classics.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I love the Left Behind Series by Lahaye and Jenkins. I am also very fond of the twilight series. I loved Jane eyre, Anne of Green Gables, Wuthering heights and the Secret Garden. In all of these books I fell in love with the characters. Each and every one of them were vivid in my mind as I read.
How do you juggle family, college courses and writing?
I have made it no secret that I have 4 children under the age of 11. I have also returned to finish my college degree. I fit writing in whenever I am moved. I have noticed that even if I have free time, if the motivation is not present, the writing is no good. I think life is all about managing time well. Prioritizing saves a lot of headaches.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to craft. I sew and make bows. I love anything crafty besides crocheting. (I am really horrible at that!) I could really lock myself in a room and craft all day long. It is another creative outlet for me.
What are your goals in life?
I have so many that I wish I had time enough to list them all. One of my main goals in life is to raise my family the right way. I want to leave a legacy for my children.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
No, but in my teenage years I would sit in the moonlight and watch the stars while I wrote poetry. I got a lot of inspiration from that.
