Interview with Doug Gangler

What's the story behind your latest book?
I had a tour business taking myself and clients to the great military history sites and battlefields that commemorate World War I and II in Western Europe. I would visit V2 rocket sites such as Peenemuende, La Coupole, Eperlecques, and the tunnels of the Mittelwerk at Nordhausen. There is no doubt that the V2 is the key technical advance in the historical progression of actual rockets first reaching space. I became absorbed in this story - but then there is so much else that helped make the modern rocket a reality, over 1900 to the 1950's and in five countries, that I decided I had to expand my themes beyond just the V-2. What really distinguishes my book? I've fit in the forty-one sites found in the five countries that display the whole modern rocket story - and tell you how to visit them! History + on-the-ground sites = History at its Best!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
A book beats in the breast of all of us! I've always wanted to write a book and I finally found a historical, non-fiction topic in which I was intensely interested. I had to research many books; no problem bring me more!

Like most first-time authors I did approach several publishers; but like most I failed to break through with a presentation.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has given me very good structure and format; one does have to read the whole Smashwords guide.

Smashwords will also allow distribution of my book to IBooks, very important.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Projecting my enthusiasm for history through my words and images I have accumulated - and through a sale knowing I have made an impression on a buyer.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are everything, it's what the book hopefully has many of.
What are you working on next?
In the field of Military History, I am also intensely interested and knowledgeable of the First World War era. I'm planning a book, to be published in March 1918, on the Western Front and its best history and sites to visit. Book will be based on my on-site research, readings, and the many images I have a good eye for. There will also be Then and Now-type photos.
Who are your favorite authors?
John Keegan, Wernher von Braun, William Shirer, William Massie, William Manchester, J.D. Hunley, Gerhardt Weinberg
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
To write, research, and golf.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, golf, traveling, and fixing major house projects.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Amazon Kindle, IBooks, and Smashwords.
