Interview with Karin Wettig

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
My home town Cologne - Koeln - in central west Germany, is famous for their special humour and their carnival season. As a girl I danced in a dance group and had much fun. My childhood was filled with music and writing. I learnt accordeon, piano and organ. At school the teacher made me often read my writings to the whole class, but as a shy girl I didn't appreciate this so much.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing at school and was praised for my vivid fantasy. Later during my study time and my marriage I restarted writing. But only after my divorce, I found that writing short stories and poetry helped me a lot to release emotions.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My favourite books about my Belcanto and Opera Singing passion were created because of a loss of my speaking voice. It is a sad and also funny story as after my divorve I ended up not with a broken heart, but a broken voice and that brought me on the pilgrimage to the Rome of singing. I tried everything you might have never heard of to find the way back to my authentic voice and after years of frustration finally singing became my passion. On this way back to my soul, my heart and my voice, I found Belcanto was what I felt comfortable with and I became a Coloratura Soprano. From my decades in self awareness and body and breathing practices I experienced such a great comfort and change of personality that I wrote books about the best and easiest way how to balance your body, voice and stage appearance.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
After various experiences with publishing companies and selfpublisher printing companies, I decided to be a publisher myself and published my Belcanto Manual - Belcanto in Theorie und Praxis in 2013. As I also published my short stories and poetry with an editor, I intend to publish more now with the support of this Ebook Platform. I intend to write a novel and a cookbook soon.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I hope Smashword will open for me a new world of creating EBooks and getting known better in the world of the readers.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing feels to me like being myself, enjoying to express beauty, wisdom and emotions with the world, while sitting at my desk staring in the trees or the sky meditating until the words just flow down from the stars. I love to share this passionate flow and there is no greater pleasure for me to sit in some traditional coffeehouse in my town or when travelling in foreign countries to observe people around, smell the atmosphere and just dive into that creative flow of ideas for the next short story or novel....
What are you working on next?
Actually I am working on a novel and a cookbook
Who are your favorite authors?
My favourite authors are Thomas Mann, J.W. von Goethe, Hermann Hesse, Shakespear, Stephenie Meyer, Patrick Süskind, Stanislaf Grof, Victor Hugo, Albert Camus and many more....
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I often would love to stay longer in bed because the best ideas come in bed.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
That's easy to answer. I sing a lot, go swimming, do yoga and meditation. I enjoy walking in nature a lot. That is inspiring.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was a report at school about our last excursion to a castle in the countryside. I found that too boring and changed the whole description into a story from former times and it read as if I had just seen it. Middle Ages welcome...
