Interview with Steven Quay, MD, PhD

What do you read for pleasure?
Unfortunately I am nerdy as they come. I like almost anything scientific: genetics, cancer, COVID-19, climate change, abiogenesis (the beginning of life on the earth), evolution. I am usually reading original science work, examining how it was done to be sure the methods are valid, and then examining the results and see if the conclusions are justified. Recently, for example, I read the Lancet paper which said hydroxychloroquine killed patients with COVID-19. Within hours I posted a blog on my website explaining how the work was 'bad science' and 'the authors should be embarrassed' because they couldn't pass a college level science methodology course. Even though some of the authors were from Harvard Medical School. Two weeks later the authors withdrew the paper. I still don't know if HCQ works but that paper didn't advance things at all!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Kindle but since my book, Your COVID-19 Survival Manual, was banned by the dear folks at Amazon I may change my preference!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town in Michigan. From an early age I had the run of the town, less than one square mile, but filled with woods, streams, and even a 'mill pond.' I could leave the house in the morning on my bike, spend the day with friends doing all kinds of things, and be home for dinner. You also couldn't get into too much trouble because if you went somewhere you shouldn't, for example the gravel pit, you would be asked about it when you got home. It seemed the parents had a form of primitive neighborhood watch...a party-line phone system and a caring community!
When did you first start writing?
I have been writing hard core science since I got my first laboratory to work in as a 16 year freshman in college. I have done about 300 of these very dry, records of scientific research in cancer and other fields. This is the first book I have tried to write for the general public. I remember the day I decided to write this. It was earlier this year when governmental officials, in unison, announced that facial masks would help with the spread of COVID-19. Since face covering of one form or another have been used since the 6th century BC and advocated by none other than Leonardo da Vinci I knew this was wrong. I started writing blogs on the ElevatorMedicine section of my website, DrQuay.com and finally said I needed to put all this into a single manual that could really help people. And here it is!
What's the story behind your latest book?
Very simple. I provide practical tips, not found anywhere else, for surviving and even thriving with the COVID-19 pandemic. There have been so many mistakes from our experts, some from a lack of knowledge, some for which I can find no explanation in a science-based process, that getting this story out seemed essential. For example, two weeks ago a major journal, The Lancet, founded in 1823 and maybe the oldest medical publication in the world, published a paper that said hydroxychloroquine killed hospitalized patients. While the media was announcing the drug was dangerous and the WHO was stopping clinical trials based on this paper, I actually read the paper and saw that it was junk. Within hours I published a blog saying it was 'bad science' and 'the authors should be embarrassed about the mistake they made.' Two weeks later the authors retracted the paper because it was junk science.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Getting this information to you. I like to help people and I hope this book can help you get yourself and your family back on their feet and finish 2020 strong.
What are you working on next?
There is a dangerous story about where this virus came from and the meaning of that information. Stay tuned for a big revel in the coming months on COVID-19!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My day job is developing medicines for breast cancer and COVID-19 at Atossa therapeutics, a NASDAQ public company in Seattle, WA with the ticker symbol, ATOS. But to be truthful, it gets me out of bed before sunrise most days.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I like to spend time with my wife and daughter on weekends. My wife is the family schedule keeper and she really like to get into nature as often and as much as she can. Last summer we floated the Grand Canyon and this summer we are going to bike around Taiwan in about 10 days.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
My reading is for my work, other books I am working on, or history of the places my family came from. In 1774 the first Qua came to America from Northern Ireland and his brothers and sisters stayed in County Armagh and are living on or near land that has been in the family since at least 1640. The history of the settlement of Northern Ireland at exactly the same time as the settlement of America is really interesting to me.
What is your writing process?
I wish I could say I had a 'method' but that would not be true! What I know is that I am most productive before noon and usually well before noon. I violate the rule that your are supposed to write as fast as you can, stream of consciousness style and then edit afterwards. I am stuck getting every sentence right before I can go to the next sentence. Somehow this works pretty good and on a really good day I can do three to five thousand words. A typical day is 800 to 1000 words.
