Interview with Richard von Fuchs

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Wood River Illinois and Niagara Falls, New York, finishing high school in Belmont, Mass.
Niagara Falls schools had an excellent music education program, now under attack in both the U.S. and Canada.
When did you first start writing?
I started composing about 1951 encouraged by my piano teacher. I got serious about composing after 1985 when I had a music store and too much time on my hands. I started using a music writing program and organizing my work after a stroke in 2007.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My maternal grandmother and paternal grandfather had music at the center of their lives. My father played string quartet in our living room and also was a member of the Niagara falls N.Y. symphony.
My other listened to records of music by Wagner while she was cleaning the house.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Bruce Dodson, a family friend from Wood River.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Not much. I have not done enough marketing on my own.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing fiction is like entering a trance, and it is a joy not to worry about footnotes or documentation.
writing music has been my dream since before Kindergarten.
What do your fans mean to you?
Which one of them?
What are you working on next?
I will include individual parts for all the music books so they will be easier to play.
I probably will not write a third novel since even my own family refuses to read them.
Who are your favorite authors?
Garrison Keillor, Naomi Klein, Paul Krugman, vladimir Nobakov
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I cannot sleep. I delude myself that I have a lot to do. Knowing my time is limited, I am becoming even more driven and frantic than I was when I was younger.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I swim, sunbathe in my garden, visit people who may not want to see me, teach English, irritate my wife and son, hike in the Alps or closer to the house, play the flute, guitar, and piano and sing in a chorus.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Often by researching a subject, such as energy healing. If a friend suggests a book, I first look for an ebook version to save postage from the U.S. to Hungary where I have settled.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I was ten, and wrote about a knight in France. I used green ink and a fountain pen.
What is your writing process?
Nothing to say. One sits and does it when one has time.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No, it was a very long time ago. Later I got excited about biographies of classical composers and the Dr. Doolittle books.
How do you approach cover design?
I know 2 graphic designers and one of them almost reads my mind.
What do you read for pleasure?
Politics, economics, environment, almost never fiction.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Shock Doctrine, explains how U.S. imperialism functions.
The Money Mafia explains how the banksters operate and that aliens are among us.
Lolita is simply beautiful prose.
Lake Woebegone by Garrison Keillor (my contemporary) is more relevant to me than Mark Twain and perfectly captures that time and place.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
The only one I ever had was a kindle. I use past tense since I left it on a train and now some immoral wretch is enjoying.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
none

Write your own question here! What advice do you have for authors?
The marketplace is crowded. If you want to change the world, you have a chance but it is a small one.
If you do get noticed, give me advice.

My Top 40 Songs was inspired by my fear of death when I was hospitalized for a stroke. Until then they had been typed lyrics with chords penned above, or written on music paper in pencil or pen. Most had wine stains on them. It is simply the indecent outpouring of my Sturm und Drang of my life. Only the humorous song in Japanese was left out.
