Interview with Duane L. Ostler

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in southern Idaho, in a small potato community. I overcame the isolation I felt there by reading. I devoured books from the library each week. This naturally sparked an interest in someday writing my own books.
When did you first start writing?
I was a junior in high school before I started writing on my own, without being forced to do it as part of a school assignment. To my surprise, I found writing to be very satisfying and enjoyable. I have not stopped since.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I feel more alive and engaged with life while writing than at any other time. Writing for me is a spontaneous process. I always have an outline in my mind about what I will write, but the details are created at the moment I put my fingers to the keyboard. Also, many times as I am writing I suddenly find the story heading in a whole new direction I had not expected. When that happens, I am as curious as the reader to know where it will end up.
Who are your favorite authors?
Tolkien, L. Frank Baum (author of the 'Oz' books), C.S. Lewis, Lloyd Alexander.
Is your series 'The Stewards of Light' building toward a climax, or does each book stand alone?
The books are definitely building toward a grand conclusion, although I have tried to write them in such a way that they can stand alone for those readers who do not read them in order. For example, books 2 or 3 ("My Math Teacher is a Vampire" "My History Teacher is a Leprechaun") can easily be read first without any confusion. Book 2 is deeper and more somber than book 1--more of a pure fantasy book with some scary elements. Book 3 is more light and humorous. In each book Blake discovers more about the mysterious creatures that keep showing up as teachers in his classrooms. The grand finale will occur in book 11, with a postlude in book 12 telling what happens to the characters afterward.
