Interview with Edua Erasmus

Published 2016-02-10.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'd like to say watching movies, but I sometimes get so distracted when I have a new idea for a story... So, basically, I spend my free time thinking up new stories
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Social media is a good platform to discover new books and talent.
How do you approach cover design?
The cover is my first step - if I don't have a decent cover, I put the story on ice until I feel the cover I made is best suited to the story.
What do you read for pleasure?
Attitude Magazine. I find it's filled with interesting articles and celeb gossip... And some eye-candy.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use my tablet for almost anything and it has a great e-book reader app pre-installed.
Describe your desk
My desk? Is this the 19th century? I snuggle up in bed with the laptop and a coffee and just let the ideas flow.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I come from a conservative family and grew up in Cape Town. With no gay friends, writing was the only outlet I had to describe what I feel or think love should be like.
When did you first start writing?
I started in high school and my English teacher told me to never give up writing. I took it to heart and see each story as an opportunity to improve my art.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My late friend, John Fazem, told me about a great site for indie authors that I should try.

The writing industry is very difficult in South Africa and harldy ever take on new clients, so after numerous rejection letters I decided to try Smashwords.
Describe your perfect guy?
I think Shaun from my short story "Just Imagine" is the closet to the perfect guy. He knows what he wants and did what he had to in order to get the guy he wants. I wrote him like that because I've always wanted someone to love me just as much as Shaun loved James from afar.
Your stories are all LGBTI related - does this mean your stories only appeal to gay men?
I think stories are universal despite the sexual orientation of the protagonist(s). We all love, hurt, yearn and feel in the same way. It just so happens that my characters are gay, but at the end of the day we can all relate to them in one way or another.
