Interview with Zoe Powers

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Mainly my animals, I have guinea pigs and cats and 3 gold fish! Apart from that it is the joy of attempting to be self employed and not being tied to a ridiculous rota...presently anyway.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Cycling, working, gardening, googling, cuddling guinea pigs and cats :-D
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
My love is of poetry, my book is poems my website is poems, although not very many 'cos I need to get some typing done! I am useless at stories, I remember writing a short one at school called 'PVC', it got a good mark but I cannot remember what it was about.
At school my Dad used to help me with my poetry homework! There is one of his poems on my website 'Fire!'
What is your writing process?
Unfortunately sometimes I am stuck with rhyme! when this happens I will end up with a sentence going round and round in my head, I have to have pen and paper near me/with me all of the time. I NEVER write the title of the poem until it's finished, not a rule, just how it is. If I cannot write words down that come to me then I usually forget them, forever!
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first and only one of two books I have ever read (I know.....2 books in 40 odd years!) was called 'The Dark Behind the Curtain' and the second was 'Terror on the Mountain' - both aimed at teenagers, I read them years ago, in fact I was forced to read the first one at school.
How do you approach cover design?
I use one of my own many photographs.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Anything????
My bookshelves consist of poetry, gardening, health and astronomy books. No novels 'cos i just don't read, whereas my Mum on the other hand reads about 3 or 4 a week!!!!
What do you read for pleasure?
Lighthearted stuff like.....How to tell your cat's IQ and Cake Wrecks!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I haven't used any so far.....
Describe your desk
I'm usually typing at a stupid angle 'cos there's usually a cat on my knee...like now! I thank the genius who came up with the wireless keyboard and mouse!
When did you first start writing?
I have written poems for as long as I can remember, I always enjoyed English at school.
